If the head doesn't have a round combustion chamber that is as large as the
bore, and the head gasket isn't thicher(compressed) than the amount the
piston comes above the block this will cause grief. Shall we say - engine
won't turn because piston hit solid surface. Less than Zero (0)

i can't give you numbers much, but basically on a race engine 0.000 is OK.
if the piston hits the head just barely. just enough to tell it hit, but
no more, it is good. fo rthe street, more clearance is required. like, i
would feel safe with 0.020, but many other people might feel more or less.
if the gasket thickness is .025 compressed, and the piston is currently
.020 under the block, the block could be milled .025, putting the piston
.005 above the deck, and giving .020 clearance to the head. valve
clearance is another issue all together.


ps-even on my pull engine i have more than zero cleance to be safe. i run
a zero deck and the gasket thickness is my clearance, with enough valve
notch for .800 lift cam and a 12.3 CR.

Above the deck?? Is that really what you mean?

Yea......I guess that is what you mean. That's a new one for me, I thought
that you had to keep the piston below the deck or it would smack the head.
What is the minimum acceptable piston/head clearance assuming stock rods
a reasonable (6K) rpm limit??

I'd like to meet up with other Georgia FTE list members Saturary,
Sept 12th. Petersen is having the U.S. Truck Fest at the Atlanta
Motor Speedway from Sept 11-13. Tickets are $15, $5 for children
3-12. If you buy in advance they are $12 and $5, available at
Ticketmaster locations. The Atlanta Motor Speedway is 40-50
miles south of Atlanta.

Everything from custom/classic trucks, 4x4s, truck races, monster
trucks, mudding, you name it, there's a little for everyone - even
a "Kids Extreme Zone." If you want to meet up with other FTE
members, please email me ( and we can work
out the details. If you leave your phone number I'll get in touch
directly - otherwise I'll email you. Peggy, the kids and I plan to
be at the show. Gary Bowling, it sure would be nice to see your
67 again (I'm jealous, I have its picture next to my computer!).

Is there the possibility that you or your shop might, after getting the
settings and doing a set without too many problems, might consider offering
them to interested parties? If so, I'd be interested in hearing what you'd
need to get for a set

I have a set of spare heads I want to put together.They are the stock
smogger heads from a 72 429. I want to put in the large valves. I work in a
machine shop and can do the machining myself. Can anyone tell me where I can
find the specs on the heads? There has to be info on distances and angles
somewhere. While I am doing them it is time to put in the hardened seats as
they are for the street and are going to run on pump gas. Also any tricks to
the combustion chambers and passages to make them flow better. I am not
looking for high rpm use ,but rather very good low to mid range torque. Any
information would be GREATLY appreciated.
