Well just got the call from the shop. They said they just had to clean =
and re-grease my wheel bearings and hubs and that was it, they were in =
need of some TLC. Said if the hubs keep start making the popping noise =
again that the best solution would be to go to the Warn manual locking =
ones. Anyway thanks to all who helped me with this. I'm on my way to the =
shop now to go pick up truck. Never thought I'd be so happy to spend 125 =

Picked up the truck last night and took it for a long ride. No more =
popping noise. The guys at the shop said the grease in the hubs was =
pretty gummed up and I was lucky I did not damage them. Anyway thanks =

I haven't tried high power bulbs in a Ranger but have used them in my
car. I used 80/100 watt bulbs in size 9004. My experiences include:
(1) They didn't help much. In my case headlight performance is limited
by reflector design dictated by the US government.
(2) I had two bulbs explode which coated the reflector and lens with a
metal film that was unremovable and ruined both assemblies at $200
apiece. This may have been caused by contaminated bulbs and I should
have cleaned them with isopropyl alcohol before installing them. Don't
use rubbing alcohol to clean the bulbs because it has an oil in it.
(3) I had to add headlight relays and heavy wire to handle the high
power bulbs since the original wiring was inadequate.
(4) I'm putting in European H4 conversions. These are probably not
available for a Ranger.

I usually don't replace anything on my Ford trucks (currently 77f150,
86f350, 89f350) until after it breaks example: glow plugs, injectors or
carb kit when it starts having fuel problems. But as for routine
maintenance, fresh oil every 3-4K, air filteration stuff incl. pcv.
every two-three oil changes, new tranny and diff. fluid/oil and an
allignment when I buy them and grease the greasable parts when ever it
is sunny and I have some free time!

Something must be real wrong with your heat-maker to be cold in San
Jose CA! Coming to you from Minneapolis, Minnesota, where our current heat
wave of daytime highs in the upper 30's is like heaven for this time of
the year. :) Last year this time spit froze before it hit the ground, I

I'm just razzin' ya. I'd suggest some grille covering of some sort, but I
don't use them past 30 degrees F on a gas engine "in da northland here".

I had a Sneeze-on (Nissan) pickup that was like what you describe. I used
cardboard held on the grille with bailing wire below zero degrees F so I'd
have heat before I got to the end of my 25 mile commute.

Perhaps your heater core needs servicing. They can get gunked up with
deposits from the coolant and then the heat transfer coefficient goes into
the toilet. A good argument for using de-ionized water for coolant.

Good info Mr Ford?, have you or anyone else read up on the crane hi-6
ignition? It is also a multi spark but with a risc processor and
multi step (non chip) rev limiter, it seems a more modern, advanced
design than the MSD products, comments?

Also after rebuilding my stock holley carb mileage went down to 10 mpg
city on a 87 351w conversion van. The van runs loads better but the
mileage is disapointing, think an ignition upgrade will help mpg?

What research did you do to draw this conclusion? What other Ignition
systems did you test?
I have tested the Ford SVO, MSD, Mallory, and Jacobs on my Lightning. I
found each had a strong points, but overall the MSD gave me a
performance. A close second came the Ford SVO, then the Jacobs, and the
Mallory was last.

I had the same trouble finding headers for my '87 351W. You'll find
that there seems to be alot for the 302 and even some for the 460, but
the 351W seems like the oddball, but alas, there is hope for you. My
Jegs' catalog lists two different ones for the
'80-'95 F-series 351W motors. Hookers' Super Comps, which are tuned
headers go for $253 (slightly higher for shorty style), but if that's
a little high, there is also a listing for Competition headers for
$118. The listing only says '80-'95 Bronco, but I don't see why they
wouldn't fit the F trucks. Don't know much about Bronc's so there may
be something. Also, if you are not currently running glasspacks, you
may want to reconsider getting them. We just had a discussion on this
and I probably have the post if you want it. Check out some turbo
types instead. Oh yeah, if you are concerned about keeping the AIR
hookups on the truck they also sell a kit but you will have to have
the connectors welded onto the headers.

Automatic transmission
F-250 reg cab 4x2: 5.4L-3.73--8200 lbs
4.10--9700 lbs
6.8L-3.73--11,600 lbs
4.30--12,600 lbs
7.3L-3.73--14,200 lbs
F-350 reg cab 4x2: 5.4L-3.73--8200 lbs
4.10--9700 lbs
6.8L-3.73--11,600 lbs
4.30--14,600 lbs
7.3L-3.73--14,100 lbs

These are all standard cab 4x2 ratings. A supercab will decrease
towing capacity by 300 lbs and 4x4 will decrease by 500 lbs. Manual
transmisssion have the same rating as the automatic.
