Believe it or not, you can actually still buy bias ply tires, especially
innon-standard tread types (like snow tires).

This formula for tire diameter calculation is from 4 Wheel Drive
Magazine. I don't know where the got the 2540 from.

Tim sounds like the rings have not been installed properly, or the
shop installed the wrong rings. could also be that the valves were
too bad to be correctly ground and should have been replaced with new

I have a 97 ranger 4x4 supercab with a two piece driveshaft. Ford tells
me to lubricate the slip yoke every 5000 miles or so on the driveshafts.
However, ford customer assistance can't tell me where on the driveshaft
this yoke is located (rear driveshaft). It isn't where the shaft joins
the tranny (5 speed) and I hate to take the driveshaft down if there is
not really a slip yoke to lubricate..Also isn't this mileage kind of
premature for this service? Any ideas out there?

My diagnosis would be that the rings are not seated right, and here's
why:
under closed throttle conditions (that's what you are describing), the
piston
is working against a closed throttle plate, and creating a vacuum in the
cylinders.
The rings are allowing oil to seep into the combustion chamber, sucked
in
by the vacuum.
The fact that the oil use drops under open throttle tends to confirm
this,
as the vacuum drops, and not as much oil gets into the combustion
chamber,
although some still will, simply because the rings are not doing their
job
properly.

Hey Parker, Sal here from the N.L.O.C. Here's the lowdown on the new
Lightning. The truck is due for release in 1999. It was supposed to be
ready
for 98, but they had to re-design the E4OD to handle the new powerplant
which
is a 2V 5.4 with a roots type supercharger. It produces 375hp. The truck is

based on the new shortbed F-150. It has 17" wheels, 4 wheel disc brakes,
2wd
(no AWD as of yet), no supercab as of yet too. The prototype is red, and
runs
14.2 in the quarter mile. My local SVT salesman, Phil, who is a friend of
mine, sat in the truck a few weeks ago at SVT headquarters when he was sent

for a meeting. The truck has just gone to P5 status, which means Ford will
build 250 units for testing, marketing, etc. It should retail for around
$27,500 when it comes out. As far as the name, there have been several ones

kicked around, but the Thunderbolt seemed to be the most popular. Phil did
tell me SVT said they that name is not set in stone, and Ford is
considering
using Lightning again. This is all the info I have at the present time.

In response to wetther a ranger has a rev limiter vs. a speed limiter. It
has been my experience that in fifth gear and in fourth when I reach approx.
115 m.p.h. the motor cuts back. So my opinion would be speed sensitive. I can
redline mine to 6000 in any gear except 4 and 5th. I also am running a chip
in mine so maybe mine acts differently.

I own an 86' bronco with a fuel injected 302. I just spent the last 5
days trying to fiqure out why my battery would go dead overnight. It
turned out to be the alternator leaching power when the truck was not
running. I have since replaced the alternator. Now if I drive the
truck and warm it all the way up and turn it off, when I restart it, it
starts but then the idle kicks down and it stalls. Also will sometimes
stall after a short (10 mi.) interstate drive. It did this very rarely
before the alternator went out. The only other thing I have done to it
is not put the smog pump belt back on. Any ideas about this??

Hello List members ,
All this talk about rev limiters and fuel cut off has got me wanting
to express my opinion on this . First , going 100mph+ in a Ranger or
any vehicle on a public road is illegal and very dangerous ! Second ,
why would someone want to go 100mph+ in a truck that is not made for
such speed (tires , design , etc.) Usually these are the people that
end up killing others!! In my opinion if you want to go so fast go to
a speed way .. It's a good thing Ford has a speed limiter because
you might end up dead . This is not a flame to anyone just a
reminder that there are others and their families on the same roads
you drive .

The Ford optional block heater for my Ranger threads into one of the freeze
plugs on the block. Seems to me that it would pretty easy to replace the
freeze plug with the heater when flushing the radiator. I haven't priced
the part, so since it would most likely come from a Ford dealer, might not
be all that cheap.
