Dear Bradley,

It sounds like you are suffering from the result of (I believe) a Ford
design flaw. I had an 89 Ranger (2.9L) and currently have a 94 Ranger
(3.0L) that behave(d) in a similar fashion. Your clutch pedal is flat on
the floor, but the clutch is *not* completely disengaged. My 89 was
purchased used, and I assumed that a clutch job would take care of the
problem. Replacing the pressure plate, clutch disk, refacing the
flywheel, replacing the pilot bearing, the hydraulic throwout bearing and
clutch master cylinder failed to solve the problem. I bought my 94 new,
and upon taking it in for warranty service, was told that the clutch
release was "within spec." What is great fun is on really cold mornings
when the disengagement is so limited that you can't shift at all.

On top of this, the poor design of the clutch master cylinder (which I
believe is too small to provide the needed travel by the throwout
bearing, either that, or the throwout bearing is travel limited) places
the outlet at the *lowest* point of the cylinder (it should be at the
highest, allowing air to flow through the system and pass out the bleed
screw), necessitating removing the entire system (up to the transmission)
to properly bleed the system, should you get air in the lines. Of course,
if you enjoy standing on your head, you might enjoy the exercise, but...

A thorough bleeding of the system *may* help with your problem, and is at
least worth trying. If anyone has a real fix for this, I would love to
hear it. I have enjoyed my Rangers, but the clutch problem (which also
prohibits quick shifts, needed to keep the 2.3 & 3.0 engines in their
powerbands) is a royal pain.

My '97 had the little blue sticker showing assembly in the Twin Cities, but
it also had a sticker on the driver's window stating the proportion of
U.S./Canada made parts as 80% and "Other" as 20%. It is a 4wd, S/C, with
the 4.0L and 5-spd auto. I am pretty sure that the radio is probably not
North American (I think it is made by Pioneer), so unless they assume the
radio is VERY important, there is a good part that is made by Mazda.

I was in Western Auto yesterday, looking to buy Splitfires for my '97 4.0L
Ranger. He listed none. Looking back to the '96, the question was "X"
engine code or not. I checked mine, I do have an "X" engine code. What
does this mean?

Looks like to me in mid year 1996, Ford switched something in the 4.0L
engine. I am not sure what they might have done that would make sparkplugs
uncompatible, how about emission, ignition, fuel injection, block
threading? I have not called the dealer yet, and I am still saving pennies
for that Helm's Manual...

I took delivery of my '98 4x2 Ranger and noticed the same thing. I
live in MN and realize rusty frames are going to happen anyway. I
did have Ziebart rustproof the undercariage, but they didn't hit
these. Oh well. When I put new wheels on it next spring, I'll try
to give it a shot of Rustoleum. Maybe I should do that now, too.
The rust did annoy me, but the truck was so amazing I kinda forgot
about it. 4.0L, manual tranny. 3.55 gears, reg cab, shortbox, 4x2.
It's a rocket. Quarter mile times: best: 16.72 sec and 81.78 mph.
Not too bad, but i expected better out of this small of a truck.
Maybe it is because of AC, PW, PL, Cruise, moonroof (I love it!),
steel wheels, PM, and other stuff. oh well. I LOVE the truck.

The "X" engine code is used by the dealer when ordering the 4.0L, so
YES your '97 does have the "X" code and so does my '98. Look in your
truck manual (from the factory) and read the recommended "Motorcraft"
spark plugs and try to cross them over. I noticed something about
the spark plugs and it said if you remove one to check it, make sure
you put it back in the same cylinder. Maybe the gaps are different.
I don't know, but it is something I am curios about.

Subject: Running outof fuel?

My son had his 88 F150 over today for me to look at the front seal oil leak
(damn!), and I decided to do a few things in the way of maintenance, one
being to replace the fuel filter--the one about the size of a PH8 oil
filter. I've heard there is another one? Also, what are the two gadgets
tucked into the frame just aft of the filter, one horizontally oriented
(metallic cover) and the rear one a plastic job, vertically mounted? (the
filter did have a lot of black soluble 'dirt' in it.

Also, I noticed that his exhaust pipe was sooted up. Knowing that
everything on it (wires, plugs etc) was new, I was wondrous. Even with the
very conservative, gas misering way he drives, it should not have been
sooty. So with it in park, I 'revved' it up to listen for a miss. It would
only go so far up in rpm and then begin a cyclic rpm increase and decrease
(step in here now with some WOWeeeeWOWeeee sounds!).

So.....could this be fuel related? The cyclic rpm change made me wonder
fuel regulator (where is that bugger?). Switching tanks did not seem to
make a difference. Any help here?

Greetings. You're sure the truck doesn't have a REV limiter on it?
Our Saturn (ok, not a truck) will rev up to about 6KRPM in neutral
and will make the same WOWeeeeWOWeeee sound as the fuel is ramped
down at ~5-7Hz to lower the RPM.

Dose Anyone here have a 86-92 Bronco Full size that is running 4.11 gears
in the rear end? I am thinking about replaceing the stock gears with this.
The truck is running 33" muds with a 302 and an AOD. Any comment would be
helpful. Also would\did it help the mpg or did it kill it?

Well to fill you in, I'm the one who asked about speedo re-calibration
due to going with the 16" wheels and tires instead of the 17" ones. I
called the dealer (Don Gasgarth's Charlotte County Ford) and was put in
touch with a service rep, now I don't want to say anything bad about
them or tell you their name but her initials are Pat Sandles. I
explained my problem to her and her first question was "Do you have a
digital dash?" Now I'm not sure but could you even get a digital dash on
the "97 F-150's? Even so I was told in no uncertain terms "No it cannot
be done, none of the '97 F series trucks can have the speedo
calibrated". I then called my local Lincoln Mercury dealer and was given
an honest "I don't know, but if you call Ford Customer Service at
800-392-3673 they may be able to help you". Those who are looking for it
write the number down in your owners manual. When I explained my
situation to them the individual I was speaking with said he didn't even
know the dealer was authorized to swap tire sizes (anything to sell a
unit off the lot I suppose). I was then put on hold while they called my
dealer. They came back to me saying that they had spoken with the
service manager who would be giving me a call. The manager assured me
that it could be fixed, even if they needed to put in a new speedo they
would take care of it. I brought my truck in today and was called two
hours later saying it was finished. It seems all they needed to do was
change out a gear in the tranny (as was suspected). I took it onto the
interstate and at least the odometer seems to be registering extremely
close with the mile markers. I will be pacing it tomorrow with a vehicle
that is known to have a calibrated speedo but I suspect it will be
within the +/- 2 mph range that other dealers have said is factory
tolerance. Thanks for the feedback I recieved and for letting me tell my
story with the happy ending!

Subject: Lighting Changeovers

New to the list, but I've seen a few messages and it looks really cool. I
was wondering if I could get some help. I have '96 F150, and I am changing
the interior lights over to blue. So far, I have the panel cluster done
(inc. odo), the courtesy lamps except for dome (burns through bulbs too fast,
so I'm converting it), but the climate control area is B*tch! f any one has
ideas or hase done something similar suggestions are appreciated. So far,
I've cut and frosted a peice of plexi and am going to cut the knobs to fit,
and generate a face on my computer. Tx,

Before I ask my question of the group I would like to thank everyone
that responded to my request for fuel mileage info on the 351 and the
460. The info provided me with enough insight to provide an educated
decision to purchase a 1988 F350 1 Ton Dually with a 460 for towing a
30' 5th wheel. The truck is a real dream. Many thanks for your info. My
question today is whether or not anyone knows if there is a two speed
differential or axle assembly available for the F350 Dually. Any info on

Hmm, any more details? I have a 92 Bronco, no paint peeling problems, but the
Blue has just gone to heck in a handbasket. Truck stored under carport at
night, in covered parking gargage during working hours, so it's not abused.
Just big time faded and ready for new paint job. Kinda discouraging for less
than 36K miles!....
