My wife's 85 chevy worked only run on 92 octane and had no power. It has 190,000
miles on the engine and 100,000 miles on the catalytic converter. If we put 89
or 87 octane in it it would ping up a storm. I thought that it might be carbon
build up too. The lack of power I thought was a restricted cat converter. It has
a computer to control the fuel mixture, timing, etc. I did not want to start
replacing parts till the problem went away so I took it to the dealer. they
diagnosed it as having low fuel pressure. ( duh!!!!!! ) The computer would
enrich the mixture as much as it could to compensate, the lean fuel mix would
have less power ping with lower octane gas etc. They replaced the fuel pump ( in
tank ) and the car runs great. Did I mention that it was driven from Pomona to
Anaheim with no oil!!! That was about 100,000 miles ago and except for the deep
clunking sound ( like a diesel ) it runs fine!!! That can of Slick 50, 100,000
miles ago doesn't seems to have hurt any )

Moral to the story: check the easy stuff first!

My 70 with 460 has automotive right side exhaust manifold. It fits OK but the
person who did the swap notched the frame rail. ( ouch!! ) I would find a truck
type or after market if I was to do it myself.

Panel repair is possible, difficult yes, but it is possible. You have to
repaint the entire panel.

I don't think you understood my post. The statement made above is kinda
out of context. We were discussing urethanes that are used on airplanes.
This statement was made about Imron. Yes Imron is used on airplane as are
most all of the other automotive formulated paints. I was talking about
real high performance urethanes, not the ones typically sold buy auto paint
stores. I assure you that the major manufactures don't buy the same paints
that the auto paint stores sell you to repair the dinged fender on your
station wagon.

If you repaint an entire that panel repair?

want to take a look inside your cylinders?

goto for a borescope.

i had a pinging problem and thought it was from carbon buildup. i ran with
the engine at a high idle a cup of brake fluid through the carb, very
slowly dribbling it in and then for the last little bit i dumped it in very
quick, and shut the motor off very quick. i let it sit for 1/2 hr and then
started it back up. it made alot of very ugly smoke at first, but
apparently cleaned alot of carbon out of the engine. the pinging was a
little better. i did this after reading about it in hot rod or car craft
or someplace. the brake fluid brakes down carbon very well.

The spark plugs I used are the recommended heat range (Autolite #25) and
one cooler (Autolite #26).

When I first got this truck, it had 60K on the rebuild and the previous
owner was running the timing at 0 TDC (probably from neglect/lack of
maintenance) and running the Autolite 26 plugs (cooler heat range) and the
truck did the pinging and dieseling thing.

OTOH, I'm driving the truck in Colorado at altitude (where I bought it from
the previous owner) and, as far as I know, it is not a high altitude
calibration. It could be that at some point, the carb jets were changed
out in the Motorcraft 2150 to compensate for altitude, and whoever did it
went too far leaning it out. Could that be it?

Since both problems (pinging and dieseling) were pretty bad, even with
cooler heat range plugs and the base timing way retarded, I'm still
thinking of carbon deposits accumulated in the head. Has anyone ever had
this problem in an M-block?

Hey y'all

Well I decided to start work on the electric fan conversion today,
pick up temp switch and install on engine and that was about it, five
minute job right...... Wrong.

I figured that the 4V intake would have a 1/2" port in the water jacket
just like the 2v right.... wrong. All I have are 3/8". The set up of
the temp switch is temporary, I figure I might need to change the rating
of the switch or something down the road so I grab some brass fittings
that are in the garage and figure I'm in business..... wrong.

Steel plug in castiron intake... Does the tern rust together mean
anything to you.

Get out the 5/16" allen wrench... no good. Get 5/16 allen socket
thing... striped out the center of the plug. Weld allen socket to
plug... break allen socket.

Grind down as much as possible and drill hole for ez-out. I did stop
befor breaking the ez-out. Drill out the center of the plug some more
and chisle away. Finally get the plug out and didn't dent a thread.....
oh little metal shaving ={

Ok I needed to change out the thermostat anyway... Steel bolts in
castiron intake... You know where I'm going with this one don't you.

well after about 1/2 hour with the locking pliers I did manage to get
both of the broken bolts out of the intake.

It's been a little over 3 hours now and back to the parts place I go for
a new thermo and gasket. I spend a little more time with the magnet
getting all the little metal shavings out and go to install the
thermostat and.... the gasket looks a little to small for my housing
and there is not much room for the thermostat to sit with out falling
into intake. I think I got the wrong one...

So there my truck sits for the night about 1/4 in the garage until

older list. I've forwarded it to all the lists as it may be of
interest to many members.

F100 Nationals In May, Pegion Forge, TN. Show info on web site.
Ford Truck Enthusiasts will have a booth there....

The event guide on the web site has a link to Pigeon Forge
tourism information if you want to get a jump start on our
research. We hope to have flight/hotel information soon. Nearest
airport is at least 100 miles away so for some people it may be
worth driving the entire way as you'd have to get a rental car
if you flew. I might set up a "ride exchange" classifieds page so
members can hook up with each other to save on costs.

I've had several people email me who are anxious for information.
Don't worry! We're anxious too and we WILL get you information
ASAP (this weekend). The sooner reservations are made, the better.

As to parking... are you kidding? The entire town is packed...
and lined with thousands of trucks every where you look! There
is no way to reserve parking. Heck, we're having a hard enough
time finding a picnic site! We don't know our booth location
yet, when we find out we'll let everyone know.

The show itself will be easy to spot. Its an outdoor truck show
with a bunch of vendors plus an indoor vendor section. You pay a
few bucks to get it (its not expensive at all) and you have a blast.
Every kind of Ford truck under the sun is there... from concourse
trailer queens to custom slammed low-riders. Many deals to be
found for parts hunters too.

Lastly, Pigeon Forge is a blast. Tons of things to do as it is
the second busiest tourist town next to Las Vegas... pretty
incredible considering it's such a small town. Dollywood amusement
park, helicopter rides, water slides, museums (including an
antique auto museum), free fall simulator, first class restaurants
(in nearby Gatlenburg), fishing, hiking, waterfalls, outlet
centers, malls, cart races... the list goes on.....

Anyone on the lists who appreciates Ford trucks from 1979 and
older (although there are many new trucks too) would enjoy
this show/event.

The "lift" was in the frame. Take a close look next time you have the
chance to get two of then side by side and you can clearly see the
difference in the frames. The High Boy's can run a 3 inch taller tire then
the Low Boy's can, for any given lift. Mid 1977 the "Low Boy" trucks were
introduced because FORD though that they could better compete with the
General and the Dogs by making the entry height lower. Basically they moved
the spring mounting points up vertically, there by lowering the truck.

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I guess mentioning never-seize now
would get me a good flaming...

Anyway, you bring up a good point as later model 360-390's have a smaller
thermostat than the older ones do. My 71 has a different thermostat and
housing than my 67, which is bigger.
