I put one in a 78 step-side I used to own , and its nothing more that laying
the pattern on the roof and cut it out . A little sealant and away you go .
No other body work needed , ( unless you mess up ) .

The pistons said "390" on them, and I looked up a number I found on the crankshaft in a crankshaft book-- and it said 390 too. The previous owner didn't know what size the engine was.

That's true. Look behind the starter for a casting number. That may narrow
things down as far as the approximate year. Starting sometime in late 68
ford began stamping partial VIN #s on the blocks of some car lines. I
haven't seen it on any truck engines so far, but I am still looking. To
check for this, look for a flat machined area on the rear of teh engine just
above the bellhousing mount and directly behind the intake. BTW--How do you
know the engine is a 390....wait let me guess: the prior owner told you so.
If that is the case, better investigate further. It's amazing how many
352's/360's somehow magically transform themselves into 390's and 428's.

Need to replace the belt weatherstripping (at least I think that's what it's
called - its the rubber/felt seals at the bottom of the window opening) on
my '77 E150. Got sticker shock at the dealer. Anyone found a suitable
replacement elsewhere?

What is the diffinitive identifier for the FE block that can be bored to
a 428?
Are the ribs on the inside?Or ribs on the outside? Does it have 352 or
reverse 105 or something else stamped on it? Any numbers on it?

Yes, Actually you have to use dropped I-Beams. I don't have the vendors
names with me, but if you would like I can email the to you.
