Some F-53 Motorhome Chassis vehicles may exhibit the A/C air coming out of defrost or a perceived A/C cutting out when traveling on a long uphill grade. This may be caused by the vacuum depleting from the vacuum reservoir, and causing the climate control system to default to defrost.
Follow normal diagnostics to check vacuum blend door operation and vacuum supply. After trouble shooting the condition, if no problems are found with the blend door, the likely cause is the vacuum reservoir depleting while running at low manifold vacuum for an extended time. Installing a revised vacuum canister with separate ports will provide enough vacuum to the climate control system to maintain the customer’s airflow settings. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
- After checking vacuum blend door operation, obtain revised vacuum reservoir canister (F0TZ-9E453-A), and vacuum jumper harness (2C3Z-19C828-AA). The revised larger capacity vacuum canister will have four separate vacuum ports, the original has 2 ports.
- Locate vacuum canister in front of the right front tire, and disconnect original vacuum harness at vacuum reservoir. Remove the three vacuum reservoir attaching nuts, and discard original single chamber vacuum canister.
- Modify the vacuum harness by separating the three vacuum lines from the rubber connector holding all three vacuum lines together at the connector (Figure 1).
- Install the jumper harness (2C34-19C828-AA) as shown using a water based assembly lubricant meeting Ford specification ESE-M99B144-B (or equivalent), to insert vacuum hoses into jumper harness (Figure 2).
- Install the dual chamber vacuum canister reservoir and torque attaching nuts to 9.4 +/- 1.8 N-m (83 +/- 16 Lb-in).
- Connect vacuum jumper harness to the dual chamber vacuum canister (Figure 2).
