  • AIR CLEANER – DAMAGED AIR FILTER IN SEVERE DUTY CONDITIONS – VEHICLES WITH 7.3L DIT DIESEL ENGINE BUILT THROUGH 5/8/96 – SERVICE TIP
Publication Date: October 6, 2003

FORD:
1994-1996 F-250, F-350, F-47

Article 96-22-11 is being republished in its entirety as part of a consolidated 7.3L diagnostic aid booklet.

ISSUE:

The air cleaner element may allow dust to bypass due to the air cleaner element collapsing/distorting under severe dust conditions. This may be caused by a restricted, excessively dirty air cleaner element. The restriction may result in enough force to collapse the air cleaner element and/or move the element bead off of the air cleaner housing’s sealing surface.

ACTION:

Inspect the air cleaner housing for damage. Replace the air cleaner cover with a revised cover that has stiffening ribs added to it to reduce the possibility of the air cleaner element collapsing. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Remove the air cleaner duct from the radiator support and air cleaner cover.
  2. Loosen the nut fasteners located on the top of the air cleaner assembly. If these nuts are stripped or damaged, replace the Nuts (F6TZ-9B680-AA).
  3. Remove the air cleaner cover and inspect for dust bypassing the air cleaner element. Look for dust accumulation inside the air cleaner hose on the clean side of the air cleaner element or dust trails along the element sealing bead.
  4. If no evidence of dust bypass or filter distortion is present, proceed to Step 6.
  5. If there is evidence of dust bypass or filter distortion, replace the Air Cleaner Cover (F6TZ-9661-AB). Reuse the restriction gauge, rubber grommet and two (2) nut fasteners if they are reusable.
  6. Thoroughly clean all sealing surfaces and remove any debris from the induction system before installing the air cleaner element.
  7. Reinstall the air cleaner cover and torque the nuts to 2-3 N-m (18-27 lb-in).
  8. Reinstall the air inlet duct and the clean air duct and tighten the hose clamps to 2-3 N-m (18-27 lb-in).
