Article 97-2-14 is being republished in its entirety as part of a consolidated 7.3L diagnostic aid booklet.
The period of time the 7.3L DIT glow plugs are on during start-up is not printed in 1997 Model Year publications.
The correct glow plug operation information can be referenced in the following Service Procedure.
Refer to the 1997 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) OBD II Service Manual, Pages 4C-22 and 4C-23. On Page 4C-22, the correct specification for glow plug relay on-time is 0-120 seconds. Based on engine oil temperature, compare the on-time to the graph in Figure 1.
|NOTE:||FOR ALTITUDES ABOVE APPROXIMATELY 2100 METERS (7000 FEET), ADD 5 SECONDS TO GLOW PLUG RELAY ON-TIME, ALTHOUGH MAXIMUM RELAY ON-TIME IS STILL 120 SECONDS.|
|NOTE:||GLOW PLUG ON-TIME IS INDEPENDENT OF GLOW PLUG “WAIT TO START” LAMP TIME. EVEN IF GLOW PLUG RELAY TIME IS ZERO, THE “WAIT TO START” LAMP WILL STILL ILLUMINATE FOR BULB CHECK. THE TIME THAT THE “WAIT TO START” LAMP ILLUMINATES IS FROM 1-10 SECONDS. THIS IS DIFFERENT THAN PREVIOUS MODEL YEARS IN THAT THE LIGHT USED TO STAY ON FOR A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME. REFER TO THE 1997 PC/ED, PAGES 5C-83 THROUGH 5C-90, FOR A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THE GLOW PLUG SYSTEM.|
