This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include 1998 model year vehicles as well as Navigator and F-250 LD vehicles.
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0455 may be stored in memory. This may be caused the Vapor Management Valve (VMV) vacuum supply line coming in contact with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve body.
Replace the engine vacuum harness assembly. The revised vacuum harness has a different routing to reduce the possibility of contact with the EGR valve body (Figure 1 and Figure 2). Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
Figure 1 – Article 98-23-25
Figure 2 – Article 98-23-25
- Use Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester to verify DTC P0455 is present.
- Remove the snowshield to access the VMV vacuum supply line and examine it to determine if it has been damaged.
- If the harness has been damaged, replace the engine vacuum harness with a new Harness (F75Z-9E498-CE). Refer to Figure 2 for correct harness routing.
- Reinstall the snowshield. Clear DTCs and retest. If the condition persists, refer to the 1997 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual for additional diagnostics.
