Some 2011-2012 F-450 and 550 Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.8L engine and built on or before 2/27/2012 may exhibit an exhaust leak at the connection between the exhaust Y-pipe and the catalytic converter. Excessive exhaust noise and/or odor may also be noticed. The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may not be illuminated and no related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) will be present. This concern may be due to the connection fasteners.
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
This procedure applies only if no related DTCs are present.
- Disconnect the catalytic converter from the exhaust Y-pipe and discard the two (2) exhaust Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter bolts (Grey in color). Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 309-00.
- Using two (2) new exhaust Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter bolts (Black in color), connect the catalytic converter to the exhaust Y-pipe. Refer to WSM, Section 309-00.
- It is very important the two new Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter bolts (Black in color) are properly seated and torqued in sequence. Refer to WSM, Section 309-00.
