  • ENGINE – 7.3L DIT – 1998-99 ENGINE CONTENT REVISIONS – SERVICE TIP
Publication Date: October 6, 2003

FORD:
1998 ECONOLINE
1999 SUPER DUTY F SERIES

Article 98-12-13 is being republished in its entirety as part of a consolidated 7.3L diagnostic aid booklet.

ISSUE:

Significant changes have been made to the 7.3L DIT engine effective with the 1998 and 1999 model years. The areas affected are the fuel system, high pressure oil system, turbocharger, and engine accessory drive.

ACTION:

Refer to the following Highlights and the Part Application Chart for change description and correct part usage when servicing the subject engines.

HIGHLIGHTS

Fuel System:

  • Mechanical fuel pump replaced by an in-line electric fuel pump
  • Deletion of the camshaft lobe
  • Revised fuel filter/water separator assembly
  • Revised fuel pressure regulator valve
  • Addition of a recirculating valve (located inside the fuel tank mounted to the fuel sending unit)
  • Deletion of the cylinder head fuel return lines (due to new dead-head fuel system)
  • Adoption of the “Rate Shape” injector for all 7.3L Diesel engines
  • Revised routing of the fuel filter drain tube
  • Deletion of the fuel dampener
  • Deletion of the fuel control manifold
  • Fuel wiring changes (valve cover gasket revised to use a single 9-pin through-connector)
  • New routing of fuel delivery lines (Clean-V design)

High Pressure Oil System:

  • Revised high pressure (Rexroth) oil reservoir assembly
  • Quick connect fittings added to the cylinder head pressure oil lines (deletion of the elbow pipe fittings)

Turbocharger:

  • Change to the exhaust manifold flange (from a bolt together square flange to a marmon clamp and seal circle flange)
  • The turbocharger-to-pedestal mounting style has changed from the “bottom of the turbocharger pedestal” to a “top down mounting configuration”
  • Revised compressor manifold design (Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor pressure hose moved from the RH intake runner to the compressor manifold)

Engine Accessory Drive:

  • New fan and fan clutch design common with F-Series design (fan clutch for Econoline requires a different tool for removal)
  • Dual generator system (includes an additional mounting gasket)
  • New drive belt tensioner/idler pulley assembly
