The current Seal Driver Tool T91T-1175-AH (205-308) may not properly seat the rear axle inner hub seal. Some repeat repairs may have occurred when the seal had not been driven to the correct depth or not seated squarely in the hub. This may be caused by the plastic Seal Driver Tool T91T-1175-AH (205-308) not being rigid enough and may therefore deflect under impact.
Use new Seal Driver Tool 205-462 when installing axle seals. The new Seal Driver Tool is made from metal and does not deflect under impact. A positive stop on the driver ensures that the seal is driven squarely to the correct depth. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
- Follow the instructions in the appropriate F-Super Duty Service Manual to access the rear axle inner hub seal. Use a screwdriver to pry out the old seal from the hub and discard the seal.
- Lubricate the lip of a new inner hub seal with grease and lightly pack the rear of the new seal with grease to prevent the garter spring from dislocating during seal installation. Use Premium Long-Life Grease (XG-1-C or -K or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B).
- Install the new hub seal onto Seal Driver Tool 205-462 using Driver Handle 205-153 (T80T-4000-W).
- Drive the new seal into the hub until there is positive contact between the hub and the seal driver stop. The hammer should rebound sharper and a change in the impact sound will be noticeable when this occurs. Verify that the seal is seated squarely by ensuring the driver contacts the hub squarely around the entire perimeter.
- Reassemble the hub onto the axle as instructed in the Service Manual.
