Engine noise similar to a rod knock may be heard on some vehicles. This noise usually occurs at idle, but can occur at other speeds and is due to the combustion characteristics of the new injectors for California emission vehicles with a 7.3L DIT engine.
Use the following Service Procedure to determine if reprogramming or replacing the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with a revised calibration/PCM is required.
|WARNING:||THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE CALIBRATIONS.|
|NOTE:||BEFORE SERVICING VEHICLE, CHECK FOR AN AUTHORIZED MODIFICATION DECAL, FPS 8262, ON THE FAN SHROUD INDICATING REPROGRAMMING OR REPLACEMENT PERFORMED.|
- Perform the diagnostic procedures in the 1996 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Manual for this symptom. Service as required.
