  • STEERING – HIGH EFFORT DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING – F SUPER DUTY MOTORHOME CHASSIS VEHICLES BUILT FROM 7/1/93 THROUGH 8/9/96

LIGHT TRUCK:
1994-1997 F SUPER DUTY

ISSUE:

Some customers may complain of high steering effort while moving the steering wheel through small angles during highway driving. This may be caused by the steering intermediate shaft or the power steering pump flow rate.

ACTION:

Inspect the intermediate shaft per the following detailed Service Procedure. Replace the shaft if any of the inspection conditions are not met. Inspect the power steering pump for a manufacturing date between 7/93 and 12/95. Replace the pump if the date is between these dates.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Verify proper functioning of the steering system and chassis by referring to the appropriate year F-Super Duty Body/Chassis Service Manual, Section 11-00, Steering System Service.
  2. Inspect coupling assembly and steering gearshaft for proper operation as follows (refer to the appropriate year F-Super Duty Body/Chassis Service Manual, Section 11-04A, Steering Column):
    1. Mark the intermediate shaft lower coupling and the steering gear upper housing to facilitate reassembly.
    2. Remove the bolt retaining the intermediate shaft lower coupling to the splined steering gear input shaft.
    3. Separate the intermediate shaft lower coupling from the steering gear by collapsing the intermediate shaft slip joint.
    4. Make sure the intermediate shaft slip joint collapses freely. The joint should move with less than 98 newtons (22 lb) effort within 25mm (1″) of its nominal (installed) position.
    5. Make sure the lower coupling universal joint rotates smoothly about both axis.
    6. Inspect the intermediate shaft slip joint and lower coupling universal joint for high free play in rotation.
    7. If the shaft does not meet any of the above conditions, replace the shaft with a revised Steering Coupling Shaft Assembly (F4TZ-3B676-B). Refer to the appropriate year F-Super Duty Body/Chassis Service Manual, Section 11-04A, Steering Column.
  3. Inspect the power steering pump for the following:
    1. For all 1994 chassis, inspect the data plate on the power steering pump. The data plate can be read from under the vehicle looking up past the crankshaft pulley. The date will be four (4) digits, with month and year separated by a comma. If the pump was manufactured in July 1993 or later, replace the power steering pump with a revised Power Steering Pump Assembly (E9TZ-3A674-B). Refer to the appropriate year F-Super Duty Body/Chassis Service Manual, Section 11-02C, Steering Pump, Power, ZF.
    2. For all 1995-96 chassis built before 2/7/96, VIN TJA08087, replace the power steering pump with a revised Power Steering Pump Assembly (E9TZ-3A674-B). Refer to the appropriate year F-Super Duty Body/Chassis Service Manual, Section 11-02C, Steering Pump, Power, ZF.

      NOTE:POWER STEERING PUMPS MANUFACTURED IN JUNE 1993 OR EARLIER AND PUMPS MANUFACTURED IN JANUARY 1996 OR LATER HAVE HIGHER FLOW. POWER STEERING PUMPS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 7/93 AND 12/95 HAVE A LOWER FLOW RATE. THESE PUMPS PROVIDE ADEQUATE FLOW UNDER ALL CONDITIONS.
