Overview
The 2003 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickups in addition to extending their reputation as rugged, practical and capable vehicles have interior and trim upgrades and new packages designed to enhance comfort and convenience, as well as a new off-road package. Later in
the model year, an all-new 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine and five-speed automatic transmission will provide increased power and reduced emissions
and noise. The F-250 and F-350 pickups are available in Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab configurations in XL,
XLT and Lariat trims. They are assembled in
Louisville, Kentucky.Design
The XLT Sport Package (formerly the “Built Ford Tough” Sport Model in 2002) is available on Crew Cabs in addition to SuperCabs, and four new monochromatic paint schemes Oxford White, Dark Shadow Gray, Sonic Blue and Vermillion Red join Ebony for 2003. A reverse proximity sensor and a power driver’s seat are newly available with this package, which includes chrome tubular step bars, an exclusive twill cloth 40/20/40 split-bench front seat, body-color exterior accents, leather-wrapped steering wheel, rear sliding window, fog lamps and
privacy glass.Already popular on the F-150, the King Ranch Package will be offered on F-250/F-350 Lariat Crew Cabs in single- and dual-rear-wheel applications for early 2003. The package includes premium leather interior trim, body-color mirror housings, door handles and Azixona Beige wheel lip moldings, lighted running boards, premium aluminum wheels and a choice of three exterior colors: Estate Green, Chestnut and Oxford White.
Sonic Blue is a new exterior color this year.
Packaging and Equipment
Improvements to the 2003 F-250/F-350 include upgrades to XL-trim-level seating (higher quality cloth and vinyl and standard inboard armrests with bucket seat option), a standard driver-side grab handle on all models and a standard tailgate lock on all trims, including XL.
New for 2003 is the FX4 Off-Road Package, which replaces the Off-Road Equipment Package. Skid plates, Rancho shock absorbers, a steering damper and FX4 decals are included. The skid plates are also available as a stand alone option.
Previously unavailable in combination is a new Snowplow/Camper package offered on 4×4 F-250’s and F-350’s.
Mid-2003, new manually telescoping trailer tow mirrors with power adjusted heated glass and integral turn signal repeaters will replace the current power trailering mirrors.
Also, later in the model year, a power sliding moon roof will be available on Crew Cab models.
Super Duty was the first truck in its segment to offer power-adjustable accelerator and brake pedals. They are available with the automatic transmission on the XLT and Lariat.
Powertrains and Chassis
Three engines are available on the Ford F-250/F-350. The 7.3L Power Stroke turbo diesel V-8 is the best-selling engine in its class gas or diesel. Beginning in January 2002, Ford offered a new best-in-class torque Power Stroke 525 that delivers 525 foot-pounds of torque at just 1,600 rpm on automatic transmission-equipped Super Duty models. The updated powertrain, which includes noise reductions, is rated at
250 horsepower.Later in the model year, Ford will introduce an all-new diesel engine for F-250/F-350. The new, more powerful, cleaner 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel and new five-speed TorqShift automatic transmission will combine to make a best-in-class 325 horsepower at 3,300 rpm and 550 foot-pounds of torque at
2,000 rpm.
For 2003, the 6.8L SOHC Triton V-10 continues to produce 310 horsepower and 425 foot-pounds of torque. The standard 5.4L SOHC Tritonª V-8 is rated at 260 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque. In 2002, the 5.4L was named one of Ward’s Auto World magazine’s “Ten Best Engines” for the sixth consecutive year.
The 5.4L has a stiffer engine block thanks to sophisticated computer analysis. As a result, the overall radiated noise levels have been reduced by as much as
3.1 decibels. All F-250/F-350 trucks have six-speed manual transmissions as standard.
Because many F-250/F-350 buyers use their trucks to run auxiliary equipment, requiring a provision for power takeoff (PTO), Super Duty F-250 and F-350’s six-speed manual transmission has a standard left-side PTO. A left-side PTO also is optional on the four-speed automatic.
Available on F-350 with either the 4×2 or 4×4 system are dual rear wheels that increase rear traction, improve towing stability and provide increased rear axle weight ratings. The optional limited-slip rear axle improves performance in low-traction situations, such as off-road driving or slick pavement.
The optional engine-block heater improves starting performance in cold weather, while the optional shift-on-the-fly four-wheel-drive systems (either manual or electric shift) provide enhanced traction.
The 4×2 models have an independent twin I-beam front suspension with coil springs; the 4×4’s have a rigid front axle with
leaf springs. A front stabilizer bar is standard equipment.Safety and Security
F-Series Super Duty trucks are supplied with air bag supplemental restraint systems that protect driver and front passenger in frontal collisions. The front safety belts are height-adjustable for optimum comfort and position.
The Aero jewel-effect headlamps are standard on XLT and Lariat models, and the sealed-beam halogen lamps are standard on the
XL models. Also available are a remote keyless entry system and auto locks and lamps for security and convenience. In addition, a locking tailgate, lacking on some competitor’s models, is a standard F-Series feature.
Super Duty now offers “uptime-critical” parts ordering 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with next-day delivery 365 days a year.

This frame is designed especially for crane-and-boom applications.
The F-650/F-750 Super Duty is available in seven wheelbases, from the 158-inch (Regular Cab) to the 260-inch (Regular Cab, SuperCab, Crew Cab) length.
With a maximum Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of up to 60,000 pounds, the F-650/F-750 Super Duty has the credentials to meet nearly any commercial challenge.Packaging and Equipment
A tractor is the power unit of a tractor-trailer combination. F-750 models with 33,000-pound GVWRs are now available with a Tractor Package that allows a trailer (where cargo rests) to be attached and pulled. The result: Ford is back in the popular beverage-delivery business and other applications.
The standard fuel tank on
F-650/F-750 Super Duty is a
50-gallon steel tank with an integral step mounted on the right side under the door. Dual fuel tanks are available on
all models.A new optional air-ride driver’s seat improves comfort over rough roads and long distances.
Also new for 2003 is the option of dual captain’s chairs on Regular Cab and Crew Cab models (late availability). The captain’s chairs provide even more comfort to users of these commercial trucks.
Powertrains and Chassis
The F-650 and F-750 Super Duty offer myriad customization opportunities. The vehicles have three different diesel engines available with a wide variety of horsepower choices. Buyers have a choice of six manual and five automatic transmissions.
A cost-efficient Allison automatic transmission with a 210- horsepower Cummins diesel engine is now the standard powertrain on models up to 33,000-pound GVWR. The Caterpillar 3126B diesel engine is standard on 33,000-pound models.
The 7.3L Ford Power Stroke turbodiesel can be coupled with a four-speed Allison automatic transmission, or a five-, six- or seven-speed manual. The engine is rated at 210 horsepower and 520 foot-pounds of torque at 1,500 rpm. All three diesels are available with the Allison automatic. Manual transmissions on these engines can be ordered with five, six or seven speeds.
All transmissions are equipped with Power Take-Off (PTO) points so that the engine can be used to run auxilliary equipment.
Horsepower ratings up to 260 with 660 foot-pounds of torque at 2,300 rpm are available with the Cummins 5.9-liter diesel engine. An engine block heater aids in quick and easy cold-weather starts.
The F-650 and F-750 have a wide range of standard and optional axles. Front axle ratings range from 7,000 pounds to 12,000 pounds, with rear axle ratings ranging from 15,000 pounds to 23,000 pounds. Rear axle ratios range from
3.42 to 6.83.The 3.91 ratio axle is a recent addition and provides a higher top speed, better fuel economy and excellent overall performance, especially for trucks logging many miles on the open road.
Ford’s F-650 and F-750 suspension packages offer standard front and rear leaf springs. An optional package includes a front stabilizer bar, four-leaf auxiliary rear springs and rear double-action gas-filled shock absorbers.
Safety and Security
The F-650/F-750 has a heavy-duty braking system. The high-efficiency hydraulic brake system is standard on 18,000-pound, 24,500-pound, 26,000-pound and 30,000-pound GVWR models. The air brake system is standard on 33,000-pound GVWR models and optional on others.
Both the hydraulic and the air-brake system incorporate a standard four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS) designed to eliminate wheel lockup in many severe braking situations. Anti-lock brakes help the driver maintain steering control during emergency braking.
The F-650 and F-750 have three-point lap/shoulder safety belts that help provide passenger protection in a collision.
