All-New 2002 Ford Explorer - On Sale Today

DEARBORN, Mich., March 29, 2001 - The eagerly anticipated 2002 Ford Explorer officially goes on sale today.

"The all-new 2002 Explorer is an example of the best getting even better," said Jim O'Connor, Ford Division president. "As customers gain access and exposure to the 2002- model, they will see why the Ford Explorer is the most popular SUV on the market."

Ford took a strategic approach to the launch of its flagship SUV in order to ensure top quality and sustain customer enthusiasm and anticipation for the 2002- model. The rollout of the new Explorer included rigorous testing and extensive field evaluation by senior management and top Explorer dealers.

"Initial feedback on the new Explorer has been very positive. Customers love the refinements and new features the 2002-model has to offer," said Jerry Koetting, member of Ford Dealer Council, 2001. "Its arrival has piqued customer interest clearly demonstrating the enduring popularity of the SUV."

The Ford Explorer is the best selling SUV on the market and has been since its introduction in 1990 as a 1991 model. It has also been among the top-10 best selling vehicles - car or truck - since it was introduced. The SUV market has shown the most significant growth of the decade in the automotive industry and the Ford Explorer has led that growth.

The 2002 Explorer boasts major improvements in interior space, driving dynamics, and safety. New features include larger door openings and storage features, improved ControlTrac TM four-wheel-drive system, and a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheel base which improve handling and roominess while maintaining the same vehicle length and height. Available later this year are the Personal Safety System, which includes driver and passenger dual-stage air bags, and the Safety Canopy, an industry-first system with rollover sensors deploying side-curtain air bags to protect passengers in the event of a rollover.

Designed with consumer feedback in mind, many of the Explorer's refinements emphasize functionality and versatility. The 2002 Explorer offers an all-new independent rear suspension (IRS) system which allows for optional third-row seating, and delivers a smoother ride than a traditional live rear axle. Also offered are optional adjustable pedals and a tilting/telescoping steering wheel, allowing drivers to tailor the vehicle to their individual needs.

The base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Prices for the 2002 Ford Explorer (including destination and delivery charges of $600) begin at $24,620 for the XLS series, $28,380 for the XLT series, and $32,690 for the Eddie Bauer and Limited series.

The volume model, an XLT 4x4 equipped with the standard 4.0-liter V-6 engine and optional premium electronic AM/FM stereo/clock/single CD player, will carry a base MSRP of $30,475 (including destination and delivery charges).

Currently, Ford Motor Company's Louisville, Ky., and St. Louis, Mo., assembly plants are producing the 2002 Explorer with the V-6 engine. Later this year, both plants will begin building Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer models with a new 4.6-liter SOHC V-8 engine. ....
