PRAVEEN CHERIAN: HYBRID PROGRAM LEADER FINDS PASSION IN THE PRODUCT
- Praveen Cherian, program leader for hybrids, is motivated by tangible results and is a strong advocate for teamwork
- Cherian served as launch leader on the Mustang program before joining hybrid group in 2005
- India native sees hybrids as a game-changer for Ford, with the power to change the perception of Ford’s leadership in hybrid technology
Praveen Cherian is a problem solver, a thinker, a team player and is driven to accomplish the goals set forth. But what ultimately makes him successful in his role as program leader for hybrids might just be the passion he brings to his work.
“What motivates me is the product – to actually see tangible results,” he said. “With hybrids, your one goal is fuel economy, and what is exciting about this is we had very set objectives – to beat the competition hands down. And we trumped them pretty good.”
Cherian completed his undergraduate work in mechanical engineering at Bharathiar University in India and his graduate work at the University of Cincinnati in mechanical engineering. Along with his interest in problem solving, the desire to see a solid finished project from cradle to grave led him to automotive engineering.
Prior to joining the hybrid group in 2005 as program leader, Cherian was the launch leader for the new Mustang program. Involved in vehicle engineering and responsible for the launch on Mustang, he took the passion for performance on that program and translated it into a program with similar enthusiasm, but toward something different – fuel efficiency.
He’s well aware that the hybrid program is a key progress point for Ford.
“ Hybrids are a game-changer for Ford,” said Cherian. “For us to trump the competition and execute so well has changed the perception of Ford’s leadership in this technology.”
Teamwork, he said, was essential.
“Our success came not from just one thing, but from hundreds of ideas,” he said. “While our competitors are out to make a statement with their hybrids, our team came together to deliver a family size sedan that is fun to drive and gets great fuel economy.” .
