Fun cheap mod!

While I was doing some turbo work i decided to yank off that ugly insulating wrap on the drivers side I/C tube. Found that it turned up the volume of my WW a few notches. I like! Anyone like a loud WW? I also spray painted my tubes a nice high gloss black.Once again ...know what i mean? Got the removal of the wrap idea from someone at TDS.

i took the wrap off mine a long time ago. took a helluva long time too. that crap is baked on, hard to get off. i used gas and a scraper and still didnt get it. i planned on using the thermal heat wrap to keep heat in the tube and hopefully cool the engine compartment some along with the downpipe being wrapped. afterall the kwik filter is right beside the HOT intercooler pipe. it does give a nice sound i think. i might wire wheel them to make them shiny.

I used chemical paint/varnish remover....zip off in 20 minutes with light wire brushing. I love the high gloss black look on the tubes.

Hehe, there was a thread on this same mod on TDS a couple weeks back that went to about 120 replies. Lots of ideas on removal and what to do to the pipe after. Some guys powdercoated them, painted, polished, etc.

Best way is after you pull/cut off the foil, use WD-40 and soak that glue gunk that's leftover... after that it comes off easily, supposedly. I'm going to remove the stuff off mine when I install the ATS housing (en route to my home as we speak ).

btw, in case some folks didn't know the foil wrap stuff was added to the intercooler pipe on the 99.5 and up models due to complaints of "too much whistle" that Ford heard from some owners. Same reason they swapped out the original wheel (what we install now as the "wicked wheel" for the one that makes less whistle.

edit - another benefit of the mod is that besides being free and easy, and providing more whistle (or... not covering it up as much ), it makes the engine compartment look a little nicer. I remember the first time I looked under the hood of my truck when I was looking at it and thinking of buying it, I saw the foil covered pipe and thought "yikes, that's pretty tacky." I thought someone had actually taken foil and covered the pipe for whatever reason. I found pics of others' engines online and saw that they're all like that, and my worries were alleviated.

Yea I was readin up on this "mod" too - I think I'm gonna find a set of IC pipes on E-Bay, so I can get mine cleaned and powdercoated, and not have my truck down the whole time.

I have seen those IC tubes before, do they actually increase performance at all or just look and allow for the upgraded boots?

Just looks and the upgraded boots. They appear to be the same diameter as the stock ones. The bends are not as sharp, so they may actually flow a little more. I would have kept my stock ones in place, except someone (could have been me - no idea for sure) had overtightened a I/C boot clamp, and one of the ends of the tube was bent into an oval shape. I'm sure I could have had the stock tube bent back to a round shape, and looking back, it would have definately been cheaper.

Diesel is now $3.31 near me in CA! It has been more than Super Unleaded for about 6 months. Give me a break as it should be cheaper than the normal unleaded!!!

Yep, but the Governator doesn't have the power and support anymore to do it, plus he drives a Hummer which doesn't sit to well with gas conservative people in CA. His grand vision was to convert most cars to Hydrogen and have hydrogen filling stations every 200 miles on the main freeways. Good idea maybe, but who is going to pay for that!!! Instead when he is leaving the gas station in his gas guzzling Hummer he turn to the attendant and says "I'll be back"
