License tag discussion....
I don't really have a specific question, other than just that I am interested in hearing what others have experienced. I got my truck a little over a year ago. When I went into the tag office back then, the lady in there asked me what size tag I wanted. I told her I didn't know (heck, I figured that if they could tell me down to the penny how much road-use tax I owed, THEY should know what size tag I should have). Back at that time, NC issued a "commercial" tag for anything over 6000 pounds. Since I really didn't know what the heck I was doing, I told that lady that I wanted the biggest tag I could get without going "commercial." Therefore, I wound up with a 6000 lb tag on a truck that weighs 7800 lb dry and empty. My conscious bothered me for a while after I figured out what I had done, but I decided to leave it alone until time to renew came along. I really worried about being in an accident or something and getting into trouble because of the tag not being "big" enough. In the mean time, NC went away from their "commercial" tags and the newer tags have "weighted" on them. I had to renew my tag this month, so I called the tag office and told them that I wanted to up the weight on my tag. I got them to explain exactly what I needed and to give me the prices on the various weights. The lady told me on the phone that my tag weight needed to cover the weight of my truck, any load, AND any trailer that I was pulling UNLESS it is a camper or a boat. The prices are as follows:
6000 - $40
7000 - $47
8000 - $53
9000 - $59
10000 - $81
11000 - $88.75
12000 - $96.50
That's where I stopped her.
I went ahead and put a 10000 lb tag on the truck, even though I don't regularly use it that heavy. I realize that if I tow a trailer with another vehicle on it, that I could easily go over 12000 or 13000 lbs. I would be curious to know how the law works in other states and what size tags the rest of you have on your trucks.........
(Sorry this was SO long!)

In Texas, "truck" tags' cost is related to the carrying capacity of your truck. The DMV seems to be stuck in the year 1948 though. They still go by what an F1, F2 and F3 could carry. If you have an half-ton, the registration will say 1000 lbs and that's 60 dollars. If you have a 3/4 ton, the carrying capacity will be listed as 1500 lbs (even though my truck can legally carry 3300 lbs) and you pay 70 dollars. I imagine an F350 will be listed as 2000 and you'd pay 80 dollars.

Like me, most of the SDs around here are running 9000# tags. Heck, I see plenty with the 6000# "car" tags on SDs and EXs. For those with the big time fees out there we also have a PPT based on the vehicle value that varies by county. If you have that on top of the licensing fees I really feel for you!

My Excursion which is considered a passenger vehicle was $46.50...net weight was 6900 lbs...my F-250 Crewcab diesel which weighs 6400#..plates with the max weight is 8800#...plates are about $85.00 per year...if I register at 11000# gross then the plates are about$105.00...In Florida you can haul almost any weight as long as you have the truck registered for the truck and load......I can legally register my truck for 25990...and as long as I pay the fee they won't do anything...and I can tow a trailer with the truck grossed out at 25990...not that I would like too..probably keep it at about 20000# haulling a 35' 5th wheel flat trailer.....
