I've been looking at purchasing a used 6.0 what do I want to look for while looking at it the truck the one I'm going to look at is a 2006 f350 king ranch with 200,000 mile it has a sinister diesel oil cooler sinister diesel egr cooler new head gaskets and arp head studs and he says while it was torn down he looked at the heads and pistons and they looked good it also has a lift with 2.0 fox reservoir shocks. He's asking 12k. Does this sound like a good deal? And what in the future might need to be done?

 

First and foremost.....What are you going to scan it with and read all the vitals with when you test drive it?

 

My neighbor has a scanner that I can borrow will any scanner work or do you need a diesel specific one

 

If the truck has been taken care of, there is A LOT of life left in this motor.

Nice to know the PO has put some money and time into the truck, but.......... If he did the work, you never know how good the person is with repairs.

If it was taken to a shop it would be nice to know which shop, then look at reviews on the shop (if available), and then talk to the guys who worked on it at the shop.

So once again, who did the work? The guy? Or a shop? And I don't think visual inspection is the only way to check if heads are good or bad .......

So, there are still alot of unanswered questions. But let's say this truck has good numbers and runs well, once a live data scanner is hooked up to it. Then yes it would be a great deal.

This is the most important part about buying these trucks. We get these "gonna buy a 6oh" threads all the time. But very few get scanners to read live data numbers.


It's not just an OBD II code scanner that your needing.

The scanners were talking about are "Live Data Scanners". Some out there are ScanGauge II, Torque Pro App with an ELM327 Bluetooth OBD, or a FORSCAN setup like the Torque Pro with a bluetooth device plugged into the OBD II port.

Ok thank you so much for clearing some of that up I'll ask what shop did the work and talk to them and I'll see if I can get a proper scanner. if I can't borrow one would it be best to buy one before hand?

 

They all the have their strengths and weaknesses.

I use to have a ScanGauge II. But since I have made the switch to the Android Tablet, with the Torque Pro App and the BAFX Bluettooth adapter, it is for sure way better.

Plus it reads all the codes if there are any stored on the PCM from the truck. The SGII won't.

You can even get the just the Torque App (free edition), I think it just has AD's on it.

Pair an android device to the BAFX bluetooth that you plug into the OBD II port and your good to go.

Scan Gauge II in a stand alone unit, doesn't do code well.

That's what most use here. They all require an OBD adapter except Scan Gauge.

The point here is that it needs to read codes and see live data in real time... anything else is a crap shoot.

OP, for Apple iPhone you'll need the OBDII elm327 WiFi adapter. I got mine from Amazon. I also use it with my laptop with the free Forscan software.
