New toy, 86 F250/350 4x4

Got a new project truck yesterday! 86 ext cab F250 460/c6/np208 with 4.10s & Dana 60 set up from an f350. T-case is trashed, driveshaft is hitting crossmember, power steering pump shot, etc, etc. But solid body & it runs!

Welcome to FTE! That is a solid looking truck. What are your plans? And, where is home?

When you are looking for another transfer case, get one for a 85.5-up f350 and the front driveshaft that goes with it. That set up will use the double cardan front driveshaft setup and besides not vibrating as bad, the double cardan joint will help it clear the crossmember. This is the factory setup for a dana 60 equipped f350, which is how your truck is setup now.

If you end up getting a different type transfer case(you might, a lot of the later ones were borg warner) make sure you get the shifter and all the linkage you need to hook it up.

Great, thanks for the info! Trying to get it safe for the road again now, alot of things bad on it from years of neglect. Seat is beyond nasty, foam worn out & stinks. Has a 87 -91 steering column in it that is worn out & lots of electrical gremlins! Also looking at a shackle reversal to ditch the puny front shackles, scary! I'm in AZ, south of Sedona.

Has a nice t-case guard for the Np208! This is after 30 minutes of scrubbing crud off.

NP208. Not the strongest t-case out there, but ok. The BW1345 and 1356's were used on a lot of the heavier trucks, and I know the 1356 came on the 350's with a double-cardan joint.

Nice area of AZ. And, that's a neat "skid plate".

Had a sneeze & guard erased! Anybody know if a Ford Np205 will bolt up in place of my 208? Assuming splines on input match, are the adapters the same? The Np205 does not have the trans adapter with it.

So i just took out the nasty, stinky bench seat to discover this truck was originally buckets with center console. Thats what I wanted in it anyway, so more parts searching!

All transfer case input splines and adapters in this era are the same.

It looks like the winch got used hard.

Great that helps! Yeah it got a good tug on a bar that wasnt meant for it! If I get the Sky shackle reversal kit it has to be cut up & moved inside because it mounts up similar. Lot of work & welding.

A 205 will bolt up to the trans, but that is it. It's heavy cast iron and was never offered in these year trucks. So it will need a custom crossmember added to support it, and the driveshafts will have to be custom made to fit. Not worth it, the later transfer cases are plenty strong enough for anything you should be doing.

Yeah I can rebuild the old 208 cheaper, might do that. This is a project truck that wont be on the road for awhile so i have time to build mounts. Front driveshaft needs replaced anyways, looks to long, i think its the original ttb shaft.

Hey guys, i pulled off my busted up door panels that are not the original 86 parts to find that one of the previous owners chopped off the power lock switches! Don't know why other thane the 87+ door panels they put in were manual lock ones. Are the aftermarket ones any good? They look cheesy in the pics from LMC & being in AZ all the originals are junk from sun damage.
Also who sells good quality replacement door lock cylinders?
Thanks for any input on this!

I just bought Standard Automotive Products door locks for my truck from Amazon.
They seem pretty good.
It's nice to have only one key for doors and ignition.

If you want '87 electric door panels there are some NOS ones on closeout at Jeff's Bronco Graveyard
