doughnut gasket a must?

hey guys,
im wondering if the doughnut gasket is a must? i welded new flared ends on my the existing pipe, and it seems to be a tight fit. Will it sound like garbage if i skip it?

No gasket will be needed with the flared ends. Ive had the flared fittings for 10 years and it still sounds great.

If it lines up/tightens down and does not leak, you should be good to go. If it is miss a lined or leaks, try a thin layer of high temp RTV on the mating faces or yes then a doughnut.
