I recently purchased a 75 f600 ex u haul truck. I have problems with the brakes I'm hoping someone could shed some light on. Truck was parked for the last 2 years and had no brake problems when parked. When I got it, there was no fluid in the master and the pedal went straight to the floor. I bled the brakes starting from furthest up to closest wheel. The brakes worked for about 100 feet then I touched the pedal and the drivers side wheel completely locked. Drove it across the yard and the brake freed up. After that, I touched the pedal again and it went straight to the floor. I have no brakes at all anymore. I plan to replace lines, master and wheel cylinders but wondering if anyone has an idea that would cause no brakes, to full seized back to no brakes. Also, if NumberDummy could decode my vin, it is F60ZVX40640. I have a picture of the axel tag as well if that helps.

This VIN is in-correct, the 4th digit of Z is wrong, X40640 is wrong.

 

That is the vin tag directly off the door

 

Z is a Domestic Special Order engine, so I cannot tell you what it is.

It appears that the first two digits of the DSO code are B1:

FoMoCo of Canada Ltd., Ford Central Division.

martiauto.com has all the 1967/79 FoMoCo records, but I don't know if this includes Ford of Canada.

 

Thanks for the reply. It is an ex uhaul truck so I'm assuming it originally came with a 359ci. I believe it now has a 330 however.

Anything you're able to tell me about this axle as well? I'll be needing to order all new brake parts (wheel cylinders, master, booster etc.) So if you were able to point me in thr direction to find part numbers I would be very appreciative!

 

All I can see of the AXLE code stamped on the Warranty Plate is 2. It should be followed by a letter, but I cannot see it.

2A & 2T = Rockwell-Timken model R170 Rear Axle / 4.33-1.

But the separate tag says Rockwell model F106. In the 1973/79 600/900 truck catalog application chart, there is a Rockwell F106 listed for 1973/79 F600.

 

Does it have Hydrovac - vacuum assist brakes ? Your experience sounds like you do.

 

Yes I believe it does. Not overly familiar with them but it does have a canister under the drivers floorboard

 

Those units require care & lubrication. I have one in a '63 F850 and I'm going to swap it for a hydraulic over hydraulic booster (powered from power steering pump). I finally gave up in trying to get mine to work in a reliable way. Possible to get lucky and find a shop that will work on them. I never was, really.

I merged your posts regarding vin into this one. I think you may have to pull the brakes apart to find out exactly what you have. Do you see evidence of brake fluid on the inside of the tires? Leaking wheel cylinders will cause wheel lockup, and the fluid often ends up all over the tires etc as it leaks out of the drum.

Brake parts are usually available. NAPA has had them for other users here.

What is not available is drums, so keep your fingers crossed.

Hydro-Vac units can be had reman'd also.

 

Thank you all for the help and advice! I have a big rockauto order coming and I'll update if a new master, wheel cylinders and lines fix the problem. Now for another common question that I can't quite identify. Are my wheels the "widowmakers"? The rears are Budd type studs (I'm under the impression that they can't be widowmakers if they are budd style? Anyway here's a picture.

 

Other way around: Only Budd style wheels were WMs.

I think you have WM rims on the back.

Your front wheels may be AR type 3 piece wheels.

No one will work on the WM wheels. Only a truck shop experienced with the locking ring wheels should work on those.
