Hey all. I have a pricing question for ya. Years back I posted here after getting my hands on a '59 from my nephew. Well the project stalled as he never officially transferred ownership to me. Well fast-forward several years and he is now looking to get rid of the truck. Apparently now he is looking to sell, instead of handing over ownership. My question is what would you all consider a good price? He is asking $1000. Hasn't been running in about 10 plus years, needs a decent amount of work and there is no Title for it. He should be happy to get that. Here in Wa. State, if you don't have a title, its a bitch to get a new one.

On a side note,the DMV here is totally out of touch when it comes to the values of old iron. To get an older vehicle title transfer, you have to prove why the vehicle isn't worth what their book says its worth.
They said my 69 F350 has a value of $8500.00 therefore, I need to pay the taxes on that amount.
I bought a 60 F600 that is rusted out, wheels are shot, etc. and I had to get an additional paper from the seller that stated why the vehicle wasn't worth what their books said.

In short....No title= No sale. Unless you are willing to jump through a lot of hoops!

Before you make any offer, I would check with the DMV and see what the titling process involves, if there even is one. I have to use a towing company to apply for mine. Joe off the street has no process available here. Other factors; check the cab real good for rust. They almost always have some, I hate to see it from the outside or when I open the door. How complete? Obvious things it will need like a grille. Expect to pay $200-$500 for a good one and they can be a real pain to change if those cage nuts spin out. Another thing that adds value (to me) is whether it's a custom cab and still has all the features. Just that 60 Custom cab horn ring in good used condition will cost you $150. Tailgate good or no? There's another couple hundred if you have to find one.
I have paid $500 for a complete, pretty straight 60 Custom cab parts pickup (no title) Paid $600 for this one but it was too much as I found a lot of old bondoed over rust when I got it home. Title but no engine.

 

With no title I wouldn't buy it unless you know that he was on the title at some point, if not walk away unless you are buying it for parts only.

My nephew was never on the title, never even recieved one. His Uncle may or may not have it. It was last titled in CA, that is a definite. Honestly I am in uncharted water when it comes to this stuff, but willing to take it on.

 

If you are interested in the truck, you need to go check with your state authorities on how to get a title. Maybe it's easy and maybe it's impossible. They DO appreciate people who ask before they make a deal and know you are trying to do it right, thus are more likely to be a help.

 

So from your other post you have been in possession of the truck for about 5 yrs.
Have you spent any money and or time on it already?
If so try contacting Ca. DMV with as much info as possible on the truck and last known titled owner.

I did have possession of it for a half a minute, but he didn't ever follow through on the change of ownership. He seems to be more motivated to move it now. Of course he wants cash for it.

 

If it's been off California registration, as in registered and licensed, for over 4 years, the record of it might be gone from the DMV system.

 

You have to decide if you really want it and you are willing to pay an agreed upon price or play hardball and being willing to walk away and see if he will give in to the previous price. Offer him $500 and tell him it's going to cost you money to get a title, but definitely do your home work and call the dmv and get the potential costs or complications of getting it done prior to negotiations.

In California, it's super easy to register/transfer a vehicle without a title, and get a replacement title. I've done it many times.

 

So, without you knowing much about who it was last registered to or any details about the (missing) title. I'd just walk away unless you need it for parts and it would have to be real cheap.
