Oil Change Required

So I get this notice this morning. No biggie, just need to change my oil. But look at the odometer. 4,000 miles? That's pretty early isn't it? Delivery was 10/31 last year. I was planning to change at 5,000 but I guess I'll do it tomorrow. Because I do as I'm told.

A new engine wears in... I'm going to do my first at 1000 just because I assume the wear process is most prevalent when new.

Wow, that is much sooner than I would've thought.

There has to be guys around here with more miles than that without an oil change recommendation.

Some have claimed the factory fill has additives and not to change it early.

Exclamation

The oil minder will advise a diesel engine oil change at 3K-5K miles for "extreme" use conditions:
  • Maximum load or towing
  • Extreme hot or cold operation
  • Use of high sulfur diesel fuel

I guess this is the difference in "Intelligent" oil minder. My 2011 was more of a mileage-based reminder than anything else. It never came up earlier than 7,500 miles on its own. I actually have no problem with changing at 4,000 if it's necessary and it's a good case study to see that it actually works as advertised. Oil change video tomorrow. I'm looking forward to isntalling the Fumoto valve knock-off on my bench.

I'm changing at 1k too. Let the filter collect any SWARF for a thousand. At that point I want to switch to 5W40 synthetic before I start to tow heavy anyway.

Epic, I'm glad you posted this. This time around, when I change at 1k, I will reset my oil life minder so I know it's accurate. I never did in the past and just changed at 5k intervals and reset it on the fly whenever it popped up as I knew I was ahead of the game.

Any substantiation of this? You'd think they'd put it in the manual. I put 250,000 on my 00' 7.3 with nary an issue after doing the 1000 mile change. Hmmm.

On my 2013 I did an oil change every 10,000 kilometres, roughly 6,000 miles. Reset it every time. Once I went a little over and I got the message to change the oil. I tow our 5th wheel 75% of the time.
I'm planning a big trip a few weeks after I get my truck. I'll make sure I change the oil before I leave.
Thanks for posting.

im pushing 6800 miles and still no message to change oil. But I am going to change it at 7500, that's when I will need to add DEF. Just ordered two oil filters from dieselfiltersonline.com

Do you know if they still use that round style water separator filter like the 2016's? I watched a youtube video of a filter change and the housing was different than what I've seen people post on here. The new housing appeared to be rectangle on the bottom.
