Question $500 for new fuel pump in '97 f250

Hi everyone. I have a mechanic friend who has a shop and everything. I can't use my back fuel tank anymore on my '97 f250 HD because it is rusting away and leaking. He said to replace the fuel pump in the front gas tank he would charge 500 for parts and labor. Is that a good price or is the job that hard to do anyways? Any specialized tools needed?

Gas or diesel? It's labor extensive if there is any fuel in it. But not hard. Parts may be close to that but may be overcharging a little still. It's a few hours job. Just gotta drop the tank. And on the ground it's not easy but a lift makes it very easy.

Compares favorably to my $600 fuel pump replacement on a '98 Exploder 10 years ago.

My cousin had one cost him $2000 in a Mustang. (air fare, loooong tow, air fare for passenger, etc) Be sure your pump fails at a convenient location.

Pump is only at most 200 so yes 300 for labor? That's very high.

Really depends on what pump is used. Pumps are as cheap as 100 and iirc, 3-400 for a Motorcraft assembly.

Problem is finding a motorcraft. The price you'd pay for it isn't worth it. Along with shipping time or wait time. Considering it'd be remanufactured no mater what. So better off going Bosch, or something like that and getting one that works perfect and one equivalent. And half the price. Sounds like he's charging 300 for labor to me.

Rock auto.com has some pretty cheap pumps. Looks like they range from $40 to $90. Looks like they also have rear gas tanks for about $75 plus shipping. Maybe i should just buy a new rear tank and use the old fuel pump that was in the rusty tank?

New is always best way to go in these old trucks to get them running best as possible.

You definitely won't want to do it over again if the old pump fails or the front tank gets cancer. Rock auto has combo pricing on tanks and pumps as well. The tank straps are worth checking out before you order too.

The straps look ok. Not much rust at all on the straps and hardware. It makes sense to put a new pump in while the tank is off the truck.
