How do you get the oil filter off?

I'm trying to change the oil in my 92 E-150 with 302 engine and I can't get the damn oil filter off. No matter what angle I try, (under hood, through doghouse, or from underneath) I can't get enough reach/leverage to break the oil filter loose. How do you get the $%#&@ thing out of there?

Are you trying to remove the filter by hand? Usually isn't going to happen if it's been on there for any length of time. use a strap wrench or and oil cup wrench that fits on the end of your 3/8" drive ratchet.

I have found it's usually cheaper and faster just to take it and have the oil changed anymore.

Should come off with a filter wrench. Personally the cup end style is crap. Use a strap type. Sometimes it'll have to crush it when the filter's really stuck on. If it has an oil cooler sandwiched between the block and filter, you'll have a very limited area to work with using a strap type wrench. If so, switching to an FL299 filter for a 370 truck motor which is a longer filter extends the end of the filter out enough to use a strap wrench.

I've hammered a flathead screwdriver through a stuck filter before...

Teutonics (above), post #3.

also make sure you out a thing coating of clean oil on the NEW oil filter gasket before installing. That'll make it easier to remove next oil change.
