59t-7006 questions??? please help!

Every one in this forum is so knowledgeable i really appreciate you taking the time to help this novice out! I have an 1951 ford f3 that im bringing back to life. I got her running great but im having trouble not grinding the gears.
The transmission case is stamped on the passenger side with 59T-7006 (the internet says thats a 4 spd) i swear could only find 3 gears and
Im pretty certain that 1st gear is a granny gear.
Can you tell how many gears this transmission has by just the #?
Also some one told me it may be a double clutch.

So my ??? Are:
Do i have a double clutch???
Hows many gears does this transmission have?
And this one may sound really stupid, but if it is 4 spd then where is 4th gear?
And could 1st be a granny gear?

P.s. also it has a p.t.o if that matters at all

Thanks in advance for the help

Todd

I am almost 100% positive that any case with 59T on it, is a 4-speed.
If you take a picture and post it from the top looking down at the shifter base we can tell by the number of shift rails. If it has two, it is a 3-speed. If it has three, it is a four speed. You may have a stuck or misaligned rail preventing you from going into that end of the pattern.

Thanks tom, if im understanding you correctly i do have a 4 spd!
So if 1st is top left and reverse is far bottom right, where is 4th supposed to be on the pattern ?

You do not have a double clutch.
You do have to double clutch to shift the transmission correctly.
The transmission appears to have four forward speeds.
Fourth gear is slightly to the right of neutral and toward the seat.
First gear would be the granny gear, hard left and toward the dash.
The shifter on the right of the tranny is the PTO shifter.
Edit: If that is a synchronized transmission, someone will correct me on the having to double clutch.

That is a spur gear transmission. The easiest way to spot a syncro 4 speed is the rear transmission mount. The syncro mount faces toward the front of the truck instead of rearward like this one.

Thanks mark and ray! I should've swallowed my pride and came here first!
It seems you're in agreement that its a 4 speed, non syncro transmission!
So it looks like i jumped the gun when i purchsed the new clutch kit, so most likely all the grinding was my fault by not double shifting????

Another random question? Anybody on this thread know where i can purchase just the plate to cap off and remove the p.t.o??? And if the process is just as simple as removing and capping the p.t.o acess?

Looks like the T9 "Crash Box". I had the same one in my F3. I swapped in a T98 so I wouldn't have to double clutch.

T9 coming out.

T98 ready to go in.

You can just take off the PTO and make a plate. Yes that easy. Sell the PTO.

That might be an option! Did you have to make any adjustments or did fit as is?

Do a search for my thread for the T98 swap. I don't know how to link it. It's easier to do than finding a T98.

Keep an eye on Ebay for a six bolt SAE PTO cover plate. They turn up from time to time for $10 to $15. Gaskets through any auto supply. Also try wrecking yards. You can also get fancy aluminum billet covers for $50, but if nobody is ever going to see it, well............

In the second pic is that the PTO removed and cover plate shown bolted on?
Interesting. The double clutch tutorial is really good.

You have a T-9 non-synchro "crash" box as previously noted. After watching Bob's good double clutch video if you are still having problems make sure that you have straight 140 weight gear oil in the trans not multi-viscosity like 85-140W. This slows down the gears and makes shifting easier and is what Ford recommended originally.

If you are still having a problem you may have a bad pilot bearing that is keeping the trans turning when the clutch is depressed. A shot of PB Blaster or Kroil on the input shaft through the inspection plate may help temporarily but then the trans will have to come out to replace the bearing.
