If there's a PATS system on your truck (and I think there is, from 99 on...) - there's extra "bits" needed for a remote start, and the programing can be a pain in the ***. For example, my '06 F150, the shop was 2 solid days getting the PATS bypass modules connected, and working correctly.
I don't know what labour rates are like in your area, but $500 would be about a 1/2 day's labour around here, which probably isn't out of line, if they do a clean, and proper installation.

Anyways - we're getting off the intended track here...
I still think the $500 quotes OP's getting to install a remote start and alarm are reasonable and in line with the effort involved. I haven't installed an aftermarket alarm or remote starter myself in well over a decade, and even then, with all the sensors, safety systems, and computer controls involved; it was getting to be a complete PitA. I wouldn't want to install one myself, anymore. I'm also too old to be folded up under the dash, upside down, trying to trace the column harness...
