Is my old oil pump any good? How can I tell?
Im putting my 302 back together after replacing bottom end bearings. The thing sat for 15 years and oil had nearly turned to tar. Before I put the old pump back in the engine, is there a way to tell if it's any good? The pick-up cleaned up nicely and I don't wanna blow $50 on a pump if I don't have to. -but I don't wanna trash my engine either

That is the magic question, isn't it? I don't mind trying to open it up and inspect it but I don't necessarily know what to look for. Are there any rubber components that fail on these things? (It's off an '80)

The risk/reward ratio is off the charts on this one. An old pump that sat for years with tar-like oil? Not much to gain reusing the old pump, but lots to lose if it fails.

+1. A new Sealed Power oil pump is $36 on Rockauto. I'd replace it even if it cost $336, just for my own peace of mind if nothing else. I was taught that every time an engine comes out, whatever the reason, a new oil pump goes in. Cheap insurance.

You ain't lying.... its got, what; two moving parts?
Brake4Beaver, I seem to remember being told the same thing about replacing the pump as cheap insurance.
-It sounds like it may be worth it just to shove a new one in and maybe I can find a home for this old one somewhere else. I just hate to be wasteful.

I PREFER factory product or NOS parts when I can find them but they're pricey. I've definitely taken that into consideration. I've put my fair share of NEW parts on only to find the old part was sill superior in performance and longevity.
