New truck?

New truck?
First time poster. Long time Ford owner. So this might be long winded. I have a roofing company and haul a 5000lb box trailer for our tools. I also have a 31' foot travel trailer that's 7200 dry but have four females in my family that like to fill it. Only camp 3-4 times a year here in Michigan and usually less than three hours from home. Work trailer is hauled 1-2 times a week usually less than 1/2 hour drive switching jobsites. So currently I have a 2012 250 with the 6.7 diesel. Truck has given me some headaches with radiator and emissions issues. Truck is now deleted and running good. It does however smell a lot worse without all the emissions stuff and my ladies don't like to drive in it anymore. So these new 17's have caught my eye. I am thinking 6.2 this time. I had a 2003 250 with a 5.4 and though it screamed while I made it work it never let me down and wasn't bad on mileage. 15-16 highway 11-12 city. But my 2008 250 5.4 rarely saw any driving over 11mpg no matter what I did. That is why I upgraded to the diesel which gets 19-20 highway and 15-16 city. I also wonder if I need a super duty any more with the f150 tow ratings where they are? So I am thoroughly confused where I should go from here. I feel like I am really going to miss the diesel performance but like the simple reliability of a gasser like I had in 03. What do you guys think?

20 years of diesels and now on my 2nd 6.2. The only problem with my first one is that I took it off the lot with 3.73 gears. My new on has the 4.30's, night and day improvement across the board. Get the 6.2 and 4.30's, keep it stock height you'll be pleased. I build homes so I'm always running in town and hauling or towing stuff. My normal driving, full tank fill averages are 12.5-12.8. This is up from my old 6.2 which came it at a consistent 11.
I primarily made the switch to 6.2 for reliability. I can't afford truck down time nor do I ever want to be in BFE Oregon with problems. If you want to maximize MPG go for a F1, if you want a SD go 6.2.

my feeling.. is transmissions...
is the F150 trans.. up to the task with the boosted V6? then the final drive!
the SD trans is well known.. as is the 6.2L. and the e-locker.
with the Work use.. go 4.30's and the 6.2L
as for current truck smell... go to muffler shop.. have them change tail pipe to different location and/or longer.. cheaper.

Posted by me over in the 2017 SD thread for same topic.....
For what it's worth, I've towed a 7x12 enclosed dual axle trailer loaded with 3 full size dirt bikes with both Ford and GM V8 half tons. I do not know what the total weight was but I can tell you it was not an enjoyable experience, due to the constant shifting/hunting for the right gear on the smallest of inclines. To say that you could tell that trailer was always there would be an understatement. I've got no experience whatsoever with a 3.5 ecoboost so I can't speak to that.
If I were towing what you do, it would be a 250 without question based on my own experiences. I also much prefer the look and ride of the 250/350, so that alone would be enough for me personally. Get the 4.30 if you go with the 6.2. I don't tow much anymore and that's what I'm ordering because I know within the first week I'll switch to 35" tires, which will not result in as much of the sluggish feel you'd get from throwing a larger size on the 3.73.
As for diesel vs gas, that's a never ending debate. I have a diesel currently and I bought it for no "need" I have, just wanted to try a current model 3/4 ton diesel, as my last ones were pre-DEF and other emissions junk. They're nice and the power is impressive stock. But if you plan to keep it for several years, decide for yourself if the added maintenance costs are worth it to you-oil changes are higher priced, fuel filters changed much more often, DEF fluid, and the time of the year for me when diesel is 20-35 cents/gal more than regular unleaded.

I love my new truck but its a big adjustment after driving decades old stuff my whole life. I've got teenagers now and they have a cow and won't ride in anything old and raggedy. I used to not buy anything that was running. Now I won't even get in my 2015 without washing my hands and wearing clean clothes. Fortunately I still have an 80 bronco for the beach mud dogs and dirty work. So yeah new stuff is nice but I get freaked out about it.

Without a doubt, a new f150, even with a 2.7 ecoboost, will do what you want. A 3.5 eco will laugh at 5k, and pull your camper easily. In my opinion, the 3.5 with its turbos pulls better than the 6.2, unless your pushing on the skinny pedal hard. It will get you better fuel mileage when EMPTY, and ride better. If you love the low end power of your 6.7, the 3.5 and 2.7 both have lots of low end power.
But, the superduty will be more stable on the highway towing, has bigger brakes and will hold up to towing longer. The 6.2 likes to rev, and is happy doing it. This seems to be a love-hate thing.
I could have easily gotten away with a f150. I pull a similar camper just more often. BUT, I just like the superduty's, I love my 6.2 and my daily commute is fairly short. The 6.2 is the most reliable motor ford has put in a full size truck in my opinion. In short, get/keep what you want, only you can make the decision of what will make you happy.

I work service in a local ford dealership in the northeast. Most guys with the 6.7 are happy and most guys with the 6.2 with 3.73 gears are happy. If you tow over 10k a lot keep the diesel! Our salesmen tell potential owners to get the 6.7 if your towing higher than 10k. and if your going with the 6.2 the 3.73 gears are fine and over that just get the diesel. Because a few gas guys that opted for the 4.30 gears are real unhappy with mileage. We have one gasser with the 4.30 gears that has been on the lot for over a year. Nobody wants them.
