My quest is successful

So I have wanted an Ex for a long time and today i finally got one. Its a 2005 Limited V10 with just over 115,000 miles. Her are the pictures from the CL ad.

2005 Ford Excursion Limited SKU:5ED41248 SUV

I have an extensive wish list for my Ex and I will start gathering parts, first thing is mirrors, man are those little mirrors pitiful.

I know those tips are the ugliest and they are coming off today. There are a couple of other little things I need to fix:
The passenger front seat doesn't slide back or forward
The overhead console doesn't work
I was looking on the tech folder and those 2 things are easy fixes
I also need to do plugs and change all the fluids, then I have a baseline for my maintenance schedule.
The truck was well taken care of but I want this truck to last a long time and be a reliable towing machine so being **** with maintenance is important to me.
Those oversize tires made for an interesting drive home, it was wandering all over the place so I will check air pressures, I'm sure the left front is low.
In the paperwork I found the dealership did a Maryland state inspection and replaced a bunch of front end parts to the total of $2400 and change. So I shouldn't need to worry about that for a while, I think it still might need rotors as I have a pull to the left under hard braking. The pads are New, I think they just threw on New pads but just kept the old rotors, an easy fix.
After driving pick ups for forever this truck actually feels light. I was impressed how responsive it was with 3:73 and 285 tires. I can make it even better.
My biggest surprise was that the frame dosent have a spot of rust, it's really clean. I have seen many Ex's even with lower miles that have frames that were really rusty, like they drove it into the ocean and parked it.
I'm glad I waited and took my time and was not afraid to walk away from those high pressure sales guys.

Nice wagon, congrats!

Will you be going with deeper gears to improve the towing performance? How much trailer will you be towing?
Does it have headers or any other exhaust work besides the dual tips?
Hopefully some good custom tunes are on the to-do list.

These V-10s when set up well can make very good towing rigs, that's all we use ours for these days.

I plan on running a 275 70 18 tire so I think 4:30's would be perfect. However I do have 275 65 20 tires left over from my F350 so al I would need is wheels, I need to run some numbers to see if 4:30 or 4:56 are needed for the 20s.
My camper is a Sunline 276SR which 8500lbs which the Ex will handle easily. However we will be empty nesters in the next year or so. So we won't need the bunkhouse model but will find a nice used unit with rear living room and slide in the front bedroom. I haven't really done any research on that particular layout but would like it to be under 32 feet and around 9000 lbs.
Headers are in the future plans, all the studs are in good condition so that is not an immediate need.
The exhaust is stock up to the Flowmaster muffler with dual pipes and ugly tips. The exhaust isn't reall as loud as I thought it would be but I still want something quiet but still keep the duals, I just like the way they look, I will change the way they exit to the side behind the tire.
Tunes are a must!!!!

Getting ready for our annual trip to visit my daughter in Florida. I need to do a few things to the camper, replace awning, check bearings etc...so that is taking priority right now. We will be taking my sons 2008 F350 KR CC V10, he's so proud of his truck and he should be, he's worked hard to buy it. He built his own headache rack and is wiring the lights right now. I do want the Ex ready for the new camping season in May so I have some time.

Sounds like good solid plans there.
I think those 275/65R20s are about 34" tall vs the stock 31.6" EX tires, so 4.56 gears will net you an effective 4.24, pretty close to the great 4.30s. But if the new EX will be the dedicated tow rig you may want to look at 4.88 gears with those 34"s for sweet 4.54 effective ratio that would pull like a draft horse! I ran my 4.88s for two full years with slightly taller than stock 32" tires and it towed like a locomotive and the RPMs on the highway weren't terribly high, 2430 RPMs at 65 MPH.

I think 4:88 will be to deep for my use since it will also be used for traveling without camper. Its not a dedicated tow rig, it will be used for lots of other things.
Checked air pressure today:
Front right 38psi
Front left 30psi
Rears 40psi.
Aired everything to 60psi and went for a drive and I might need to drop the fronts down 5psi, the rears are good. I do notice the pull to the left even more now, so I think brakes will be the first thing I do when we come back.
