I need some help finding replacement screws for the contact set(points) for my 1971 F-100. Not having any luck at auto parts stores. If I knew what the thread dimensions were, maybe I could go to a nut and bolt store? I have replaced them, but the replacements were not the right thread and are stripping out. Thanks for reading my post and thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Ok if the plate the hold down screw screws into is striped and you know the size of the replacement screw(s) then hit the "nut & bolt" store and find the next size bigger and tap the hole to that size.


The only thing I would check on before going the bigger screw size is, will it fit the point set slot?

The plate seems to be okay, the screws are stripped. I don't know what the thread size is. Nobody seems to know.

 

They are either #8/32 or #6/32. Most hardware stores and hobby shops that sell R/C cars and planes.

Suggestion: If you live in the Phoenix area, you might give Jeff a call at Don Sanderson Ford in Glendale to see if they have any.

Jeff (FTE member JEFFAFA .. posts mainly in this forum) told me they have quite a few obsolete parts that are no longer on their inventory.

Plus, most dealers didn't inventory standard (hardware) parts, so it's possible that many other dealers in AZ have them.

Go to a hardware store and buy some #8s at the proper length. Splurge and buy 6's. If the thread in the plate is okay, something will screw in.
You have a $1 problem.

 

C.John, I tried buying a couple #8-32's but none that size of 5/16'' long, they were to short or to long.

If ya have a dremel then cut shorter but a guy needs to put a nut on first to help keep the threads straighten out after cutting. Or a guy needs some Jewelers file to dress up the cut threaded end.

If to long they will hit the lower advance curve spring bracket. Then big troubles!

PS We do like to hear back about the fix you ended up doing not just hit an ran!!

If I can't find a screw, nut, bolt or washer in my shop/shed/basement I'll go to the neighbors. Someone has one.

 

I kind of picked up saving nuts & bolts from my dad since he was a farm boy from Missouri

I seem to remove every screw or nuts & bolts from an old part that goes into the Trask ben for the recycler.

So, I find a good use for the empty plastic coffee containers and even have a few old oem extra head bolts.

I'm sure, I'd hav a dizzy points screw in one of 7+ full coffee containers for those days of a badly needed bolt or screw when I drop one into one of those places that can only be found when the motor an the front clip is remove.
We all had those days!

Almost all electrical wire strippers have the holes near the jaws that are for cutting those screws to the proper length. I bought a set of stainless steel screws for my F350 dist.The screws were a little too long, I just trimmed them off using my wire cutters.

 

2X. Most people aren't as much of a Pack Rat as I am (not a hoarder) but I strip most everything I throw away. You never know when you end up needing some little nut, screw, wiring connector, cord strain relief, etc. Just last night my stash came in handy. I am fixing up a cabinet for my GF's Mom. A Buddy of mine had given it to me mainly just for the wood. Something happened to one of the drawers. And last night I caught it was missing one out of the four plastic feet on the bottom of it. I just happened to have one in my stash. Pic of it below with a piece of plywood I stained with red oak and golden oak both to get it to match as close as possible since they are two different woods. Originally there was a 2nd drawer there so no floor. I had to add the floor to make it a shelf.
