Starter not working.

Drove the truck around a little today. Brought it home changed the oil and fuel filters. Buttoned it up and went to start the truck. Starter engauged and worked for about a second then stopped. When you turn the key everything happens as it should except the starter. Put the truck in neutral (6spd) and disconnected the push fitting under the hood. Put it to the positive post on the battery and got nothing. Im guessing i need a new starter. Is there any breaks in power past the push fitting under the hood to the starter?

Nope. You need a starter... as long as the batteries are good. Check for 12v at the starter solenoid.

I agree. You can check the connections on the starter and battery voltage. If they look good and still nothing, time for a new starter.

Kinda what i was thinking. Its cold and had stuff to do so i didnt do the due dilligence of checking voltage. The edge evo shows 11.8v and the headlights are fairly strong. Thinking of hunting a 6.4 or 6.7 starter as that seems to work and help start the truck faster

If the brushes are stuck a moderate rap on the starter with a hammer can get you going again for a short time.

Ill probably go bang on it tonight and see if i can actually park it in a better place to work on it. Looked at starters last night and im thinking bout sitting on santas lap this year

I carried an engineer's hammer in my Ranger. It wasn't every start, but one a day or two. Strung that sucker along for a couple months. Changed it in the parking lot of Autozone at 50th and Indiana actually, I had to get push started out of the Sonic by Monterey.

As long as your batteries are good, if you choose to not upgrade to a 6.4 starter at the moment you could disassemble the starter solenoid - The solenoid has two poles shaped like the head of a mushroom, the poles can usually be removed and rotated by 180 degrees to provide a solid electrical connection between Battery+ and the actual starter motor.

And with some you can do a little work to flip the contact disc over depending on the design. I had to do that this summer with the Perkins diesel in my Vermeer chipper.
