Ford Shuns New API CK4 and FA4 Oils

Looks like Ford is not signing up to use the new upcoming CK4 oil in any of their Power Stroke engines and are creating a new internal oil specification.

HOLY COW Troy....

I was posting about this new change months ago here... and now we learn Ford doesn't like it.

Wonder what they are going to come up with and/or will CJ-4 still be around then?

Yeah I'm a bit surprised too.

Here's the official Ford letter on the topic. For now Ford recommends a API CJ-4 oil without showing the API CK-4 as acceptable until the oil manufacturers meet Fords latest oil specification.

I may have to stock up on some current CJ-4 Oil just to be safe. And of course the markings are going to be confusing because they are going to have CJ-4 and CK-4 on them. UGH....

Interesting that CK-4 /FA-4 has lower viscosity and doesn't protect the motor as well as CJ-4.

yea, this could turn into a real problem. Could be hard to find oil? Is Ford moving to make everyone buy Motorcraft branded oil?

Phew! Ok, without me doing all the research.... Seems you guys already know the answer, what brand oil currently meets or has a CJ-4 Rating? Help us all out.

Ok Shell Rotella is safe for now I would guess.

All of the major oil brands made for Turbo Diesels meet the CJ-4 spec. But if the industry moves to CK-4 except Ford, it will be hard to find oil. years ago, the standard was CH-4, then CI-4, and now CJ-4. It was always *assumed* that the new spec was inclusive of the older ones.

Since the issue seems to be phosphorus content, maybe there is an additive to fix it?

I don't like the idea of Ford going off on their own, but it appears they have good reason in this case.

Maybe there will be a low and high phosphorus content oils for the CK-4 rating.

The article stated that Ford was lobbing for a label on the bottle for the low phosphorus if under a certain amount.

No oil company in their right mind is going to not make an oil that can be used in Ford Diesels. Forget about how many 6.7s are on the road, Ford said ANY of it's diesels...

I bet companies like Royal Purple and Amsoil will continue making CJ-4 spec oil. However, since they would gain market share in a niche market I bet the price will be higher. This is if companies like Shell, Mobil, and Chevron all quit and their new oil doesn't meet Ford specs.

And to add to Dave's remark - the latest oil spec coming out was always able to be used in previous motors, which is why this is disconcerting. If it doesn't work well for Ford it makes me wonder why it will work well in a GM or Ram/Fiat diesel pickup truck motor? If GM/Fiat all pull out of CK-4 for their current trucks I don't see this new oil staying around long in it's current form.

Great info Troy, thanks for posting. Reps sent.

Very curious what, if anything, GM and RAM say about the new oil. Perhaps it has to do with regen strategy - diesel slipping past the rings into the new, thinner oil thins to unacceptable levels?

Obviously, the move to thinner oils is all about fuel economy. I'm very pleased Ford seems more concerned about longevity.

Thanks Mike, I knew I was forgetting something. It all makes my head spin. I don't want to drop a bunch of coin stockpiling a bunch of CJ-4 Mobil-1 5-40 either, Although I may buy enough for 1 year's worth of oil changes while this whole thing gets sorted out. That's about 3 changes for me based on my driving habits.

I have enough for two oil changes which will get me about a year and a half. If they haven't figured it out by then there's gonna be a few lawsuits IMHO.
