Free Spin Kit vs. Locking Hubs

I'm not grasping the difference. Can someone explain it to me ?

Thanks....

The Dynatrac free spin kit replaces the factory unit bearing assemble with a traditional spindle, hub and serviceable wheel bearings. It still uses locking hubs ( just much stronger ones ) mounted in the new wheel hub.

I see at least a couple kits on the market. So, functionally, there is no difference ? A 'free spin kit' is just a name for a kit that converts a front axle with unit bearings to serviceable bearings.

Dynatrac is the name of a company based in sorthern ca that builds high quality aftermarket axles based on the Dana 44,60, 70 and 80 design.

Free spin is Dynatracs registered trademark name for the kit, severeral compaines also make serviceable bearing kits but I am not familiar with what those companies call them or the quality of their parts.
Cool video here

I do know for a fact that Dynatrac has their own forgings and they are top quality parts. ( I've been to their factory several times as the owner is a business aquentance of mine and I also have their free spin kit on my Ex )

I really believe in oem Ford locking hubs. Get a pair off a manual hub truck for $50 and you're good to go.

I'm not a free spin guy, you could replace your unit bearings many many times for what the free spin kit costs (and the bearings for the free spin kit need replaced just about as often all the same), especially now that much stronger aftermarket unit bearing assemblies are available these days.

After watching the video.... I have to think the name originally came from the Dodge based kit, since the Dodge was never available with locking hubs from the factory.

Thanks

The spidertrax "stronger" unit bearings are not really stronger bearings as they still use the same bearing spacing but they are serviceable, they also cost about the same as a free spin at $600 per side. Also, maybe somebody has modified them for a locking hub but they are designed as a slug.

Yup, For the ford the benifit is to go to a bigger stub axle and serviceable bearings. Not something most people would find nessasary but serves a niche market.
