Truck dying/fuel problem

Today I filled up my rear tank at shell per usual. My rear tank the gauge works though it does run out at 1/4 tank as it always has as long as I've had this truck. As my truck got close to the 3/4 mark it started sputtering a bit and it would rev up suddenly without me giving it any more gas, it does this when it runs too low and I usually switch to the other tank when this happens and it goes away once I do that. The truck died before the tank even got to the 3/4 mark and would not start back up so I got out and used a hand pump to pump out 5 gallons out the back tank and into the front and it started. I was driving home about 10 minutes later and it lurched and gave it more gas without me giving it any. Can anyone can shed any light onto why this is happening?

23 TP/FIPL sensor out of range

14 Profile Ignition Pickup PIP Erratic

29 Open vehicle speed sensor

59 LO-Fuel pump ckt open/2-3 shift error

67 PNP or clutch switch ckt failure

I read these codes last week if that has anything to do with this problem

If both tanks are giving you the same problem, your problem should air intrusion from the selector valve or forward. Get under the truck and inspect all your fuel lines for cracked or degraded hoses and steel lines. W/that much air intrusion you should be able to see fuel leaking somewhere. Also check your engine oil level, a small crack in the lift pump diaphragm will leak fuel into the crankcase, eventually it gets large enough to starve the engine. Had this happen to me.

Um, there are no possible codes that could be associated with this. You realize that the only codes your truck can throw are for the transmission, right?

Anyway, +1 above; please clarify whether this is now happening on both tanks or just one. When it lurched on the way home, did it keep running and did you make it home?

it sounds like your lift pump is sucking air either from cracked lines, or bad pickups in the tanks.
what i would do is remove the intake line from the lift pump, and start checking the lines back to the selector valve and tanks by either pressurizing them, or drawing a vacuum on them.

I started looking at fuel lines by running the truck and I opened the hood and after not finding anything leaking or damaged lines I was about to move under the truck and follow the lines from the tank and I noticed the big hose from the radiator had been vacuumed in and was collapsed so I opened the radiator cap (the motor has run for maybe 5 minutes so it wasn't hot) and the line immediately filled back up or 'uncollapsed'. I then started the truck back up and it ran normal and had no problems all day long and has since been fine.

I had to dropped both tanks some butthead broke both pickup strainers. The strainers go to the bottom of the tank. Mine where gone had a hard time finding them in Ohio but the search was good two for $30. These could be cracked on the pickup tube so when fuel goes below crack you are sucking air. It does sound like air intrusion so your hunt is on good luck. I solved my same problem by re-doing all fittings and fuel lines including fuel return system. Good Luck

i really doubt that someone broke them.
they fail on their own from old age.

Yup... I've got broken ones on two of my trucks, the third was in decent shape surprisingly. Someone probably replaced it.

One solution a number of people here have used is to take a short piece of fuel line, the right length to go to the bottom of the tank, and fit it in place of the cone of failure. Then cut a V shape in the bottom of it, so it can't suck against the bottom of the tank, and call it good.

I haven't heard about any failures from doing that, either.
