1999 Expedition-air compressor/bags
Is it easy to replace the air compressor & what can we do to trouble shoot? Are you able to fill the air compressor? Can you hear it filling? Not sure if its the air compressor or air bags. Are they expensive?
Of all the years I've owned a ford never had one that had this.
Thank You!!

No such thing on the 1999 models. You have the compressor, the air suspension module, the compressor relay, a front height sensor, a rear height sensor, a steering sensor, and an air release solenoid on each of the 4 airbags/shocks.

If the problem was the rear height sensor (about $250 btw) then the front would still pump up. Since neither the front nor the rear will pump up then it more likely an issue with the air compressor or it's relay. If they jumper the 2 compressor motor wires at the compressor relay does the compressor run?

From what I've read, the sensors don't go bad that often.
If you need a relay, I've got several parts from American Air and have been happy with parts & the service I received. I'd give them a call and see what they say. The guy I talked to used to be a Lincoln or Ford tech and flat new what he was talking about.
I looked and they have a new Ford air suspension compressor relay for your Expy.
Unless you really want or need the air suspension, I recommend doing an air suspension conversion on a Expedition. This is what I did a couple weeks ago and couldn't be happier.
By the way, they even bought by old compressor & solenoids from me. $45 back in my pocket! Woo-hoo.

My 97 4X4 has 2 air springs in the rear and 2 air shocks in the front. I think the 99's are the same. Your view of the usefulness of the air suspension will determine if it is worth fixing. Converting to springs will take all the complication out of the system. If you carry heavy loads or tow, the self leveling feature is worth retaining the air system.
Over the many years I have owned my 97 I have replaced the compressor, front air shocks and rear air springs at a cost of about $600. To me it was worth the cost to retain the air system.
