Question PLease HELP - F-150 won't go above 30 mph

Hello - My truck will not go above 30 mph - rpm's will rev high but, speed will not climb. I was able to put the truck in 2nd gear and drive home at @ 40 mph. Truck has 135K miles on it, I'm the original owner. If anyone has any ideas as to what this might be I would greatly appreciate any info before going the mechanic.

Sounds like transmission. I'd start with having it flushed, unless the fluid smells burnt. If the fluid on your dip stick smells and it is dark, you may have smoked it.

Is your check engine light on? May run the codes see if it is something else.

Just start with checking out the fluids and then doing a flush and make sure who ever does it inspects the bottom of the pan well. Best of luck too you.

Don't waste time on a flush, A flush will never ever ever fixes anything. if it is the transmission flushing it will just waste money, take it to a trans shop to just let them drive it. also give a little more specifics, year, engine, etc. so will it not shift, does it shift from 1 to 2 when manually shifted?

Well no a flush will not fix it but getting the fluid out and looking at it and cleaning out the insides will at less give some more insight on the issue at hand. And the more information you can take to a shop the better off you usually are unless you trust the shop completely.

Thanks for the reply ... don't know how often you check back in ... but, yes the truck will manually shift from "D" to 2nd gear. It's a 2005 F-150, 5.4 EFI V8 engine ... any ideas would be great.

just stop by a transmission shop. I sure wouldn't waste money on a tranny flush.

I'll disagree with jt351...I've had several higher mileage vehicles come through the shop that would shudder and lag that a flush completely solved the problem. Flushing out old crud than can be clogging the ports and inlets for $80 is a lot better than the cost to drop a tranny and rebuild. It's a good first shot for cheap, always start with the easiest and least expensive fix first! A shop is going to charge at least an hour labor to start to diagnose an issue like this, at a minimum of $75 an hour.

Well you are correct shudder and lag is a cause of fluid deterioration, but no shift at all is electrical or just plain screwed. And a slightly slipping trans with black fluid usually will totally fail with a flush cause new fluid is thinner. But go ahead and change fluid and throw more money away. It could be just a MLP switch or TP sensor. Most shops including Aamco will at least test drive it at no cost.

If as you were driving your rpm's just kept rising but you were not going any faster, it sounds like a snap ring for your drive or over-drive gear. This would not allow for your transmission to shift into the next gear properly. Which in turn would not let you exceed the speed set for the transmission to shift. This is about a 1300-1600$ fix. Don't waste you time or money on a flush, but you could save a couple bucks and buy the gasket, fluid, and filter on your own instead of the shop charging you 21% over the sale price of these parts.

Cool 2006 Ford Expedition Ran out of gas

Hi
The other day my wife was driving the car and it ran out of gas. So I walked over to where she was at a filled a little less then a gal of gas in the tank and luckily we were in the neighborhood so i drove it home slowly. I went to get 6 more gals of gas, and it is running like crap. It has a rough idle and won't drive over 20mph. I've changed sparkplugs, fuel filter and both camshaft sensors. I have a codes now for camshaft P0345 P0349 and running lean and rich codes P2197 and P2198. I'm stuck and have no idea what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Aside from possible clogged injectors, a fried/overheated fuel pump comes to my mind.

Running any modern vehicle , with the pump in the tank , is bad news.

the pump is designed to be immersed in gas , when you run one out of gas ,
the armature in the pump is exposed , and gets very hot very quick , and can fry the pump , and/or the wiring attached to it .

might also check fuse .

I don't let any of my FI vehicles get under 1/4 tank for that reason.
