Age old qustion. More power from a 5.8l.

I just bought a 94 F-150 Reg Cab SB with a 5.8l and im wanting to make more power through out the rev range.

Nothing rediculous. Just wanted some ideas on things to do. What headers are a good buy. What cam will provide good power everywhere. Its mostly a work/toy truck. Might pull occasional 4000lb trailer. Mostly just a fun vehcle though.

Just looking for good suggestions that wont break the bank.

Thanks

i would search as this is discussed on a daily basis. is the truck 4wd or 2wd? are you running stock tires or something larger?

well the best gain will be with a gear swap. your more then likely running the stock 3.55 gears and that combo with 33's is a power drain. since you have the E4OD tranny i would go with a set of 4.56 gears. this will give you a little extra giddie up with the 33's and help a bunch for towing. then if you step up to 35's you will be running well. changing to some shorties, hi flow y pipe and hi flow cat with a single 3" exhaust out stock location would help some as would a cam but the stock upper/lower efi intake is a bottle neck so a cam upgrade wouldnt help as much.

so start with gears and see what you need from there.

I dont really want to mess with gears, as these trucks get pretty bad mileage it seems anyways. Im not looking for night and day difference. I do pretty good finding used aftermarket parts, im just wondering what to look for.

4.10 gears
Longtube headers.
1.7 roller rockers.

That's listed in order of importance from most to least in terms of how much it will improve performance, increase transmission life, and believe it or not improve fuel milage.

Running 33's and towing is going to be hard on an E4OD, mainly the converter so keeping it cool should be first and foremost. Plumb in a PSD trans cooler and bump the base timing up. A gear swap on a 4wd does take more time and more $$$ than a 2wd, but if you plan on keeping the truck for a long time then it'll be worth it.

I can do the gear swap, i just dont want to. This thing already get crap gas milage with my 31's on it. I know the thought process of why putting deeper gears can increase gas milage but im still skeptical.

Im pretty sure the truck has a trans cooler on it already. But i guess i will double check. My bronco ran 33 for years on an e40d, there pretty tough trannys to start.

What is the 1.7 Roller rockers. Are the length's different?

Yes stock rockers are 1.6:1 so adding 1.7 rockers opens the valve further.

Gas consumption is closely related to the operation mode of the EEC. It switches to open loop from closed loop under certain conditions related to engine load and that results in a richer fuel map being employed. From watching the operation of the computer in my truck with the Tweecer attached it doesn't take much load to get the computer into open loop, it's there every time the pedal is pressed to accelerate and it frequently drops into OL at highway cruise when climbing a grade. My truck has 3.55's with 30" tires while your truck has an effect 3:1 gear ratio with 33's which puts the engine under increased load so your computer will be open loop more often.. maybe all the time except when coasting.

hooker makes a nice set of long tube headers for your set up as for a cam i would go comp or crane and got with a cam set up for towing this will help push those 33's. a shift kit can help save your e4od
