Thanks bokker. I did just replace the aftermarket sending unit with a new FoMoCo one. I will try to push the relief valve disc to "reseat" it when I get a chance - probably next weekend. I think the seating portion at the end of the spring is a disc or round wafer rather than a ball, which is probably why it can tend to bind.

After looking at the oil pump installation instructions, I'm not so sure I can depress the pressure relief spring after the oil pump is off without removing the timing cover. Here's a link to a picture of the installation instructions for the oil pump and pressure relief spring.

My Temporary fix is working for now. I replaced the oil and filter with 10w30. It has no flucuations except after I hualed a ton of Wood Pellets home approx 25miles uphill. I worked her pretty hard and I got some needle movement at idle. But under normal conditions it seams to workinf fine...for now.
