I was taking my water pump off because I thought it was faulty.
Turns out the wheel that the pulley bolts to is cracked on one side, causing it to wobble off.
???? a complete water pump can be as little as 12 dollars. I can t see any justification in trying to press a new shaft into one, or try to repair for the small amount of cash.

Yea I was going to head to pull a part anyway, just figured it'd be less hassle to take every accessory off to remove and install the pump.
I'm guessing you got it at the afore mentioned wrecking yard. How do you know its any good? It would really suck if you had to do the job twice because the replacement leaks from lots of mile or sitting dry for a long time. Anyway, silicone would be fine.

Well I will be adding a new gasket for the seal to the block, but I wanted to clear all the grime out of it.
Spins fine, lots of fluid poured out of just the water holes when I pulled it off.

I would hope that you would use new gaskets but that has nothing to do with the condition of the pump itself. The fact that you need to clean grime out of it is not good. Grime wears on the bushing and seal. Just because it spins fine and didn't leak on a cold motor doesn't mean that the bushing isn't worn and it won't leak with some pressure behind it. I've got 13 years on a $29 pump that still works fine but I wouldn't be surprised if it took a dive tomorrow. You're trying to save a few bucks with a used pump of unknown age that won't last as long as a new one that doesn't cost much to begin with. You already indicated that you wanted to save the time and labor associated with changing the pump but you had to pull one off a junk truck, clean it out, and install it on your truck. Then you'll have to do it all over again waaay sooner than if you had bought a fresh one now. Where's the savings or the logic for that matter?

Water pumps are one of the things you dont buy at a junk yard unless you dropped the vehicle off yesterday.
Adn it was replaced the day before.
