What is it with these Explorers ?

About 6 years ago, my daughter had a 1990 Bronco II 4X4 that was in very good shape and the only problem it had was cutting out at high RPMs around 65-70 but ran fine at lower RPMs !
I used Premium gas and Seafoam and seemed to help a little.
The vehicle was totaled before the problem was solved.

About 2 years ago she bought a 1997 Explorer sport 4X4 that did the same thing only worse it would start cutting out at lower RPMS also.
Once it was so bad I could barely get it to move, so I turned it off about 5 minutes, started it back up and it ran fine. (problem never resolved and vehicle is gone) I always ran 100% gas and put in Seafoam every time I filled it up !

She just bought a 1992 XPL Sport 4X4 and it seems to be doing the same thing the Bronco II was doing only not quite as noticeable.
I want to resolve this issue before it gets really bad !

Anybody have any answers, cause this has to be a problem in a lot of the Explorers!

I'd probably start with some basic diagnostics:

1) pull codes from the computer in case the computer sees the problem (this can be done with nothing more than a paper clip: put "ford eec-iv self test" into your favorite search engine).

2) Put a fuel pressure gauge on it and see what the fuel pressure is doing when it hesitates. If the pressure is dropping off, that suggests a problem with fuel delivery.

3) Check for vacuum leaks.

4) See about any tune-up items that might be due for replacement.

Not that the fuel pressure or other ideas arn't the way to go, but has anyone checked the gas station that the trucks are filling up at. 3 trucks all with the same type of problem, same location,???? . What about the exhaust system? Older trucks, bad Cat converter, I had a car that showed the same type of problems. Ended up going to Midas to find the problem. Just food for thought. Good luck

Mr. Shorty,
I will have mechanic friend pull the codes Saturday and see what happens.

pbjohns, I have lived in the same house here for 20 years and have gotten my gasoline at a local Quiktrip which has good quality gasoline although it is 10% ethanol.
I have had many vehicles over those 20 years and the 3 Bronco/XPL are the only ones I have had problems with.
The 97 XPL was always filled with 100% gasoline at a local Sinclair and always kept a can of Seafoam in the tank.
The 92 also has no Cats at this time !

FYI my 1988 F-250 has similar problems!
Seems like all the fuel injected Fords are giving me fits.

im not sure but is it basically naptha solvent. that might be effecting something. I have been using ethanol 10% for 20 years. RAn a 89 F250 with 5.8 for 250k miles. 2002 EXP has 110k, 2001 F150 has 200k. Never had 1 injector problem. Pressure regulator died on the 89 about 200k miles. Other than that i never put anything the in gas, just the 10% alcohol. Never had a fuel problem on a FORD.-----just a thought.
