goofy gauge

anyone have a lead idea why the oil pressure gauge stops working?? For several months the gauge, while at idle, would jitter/quiver ardently. On pressure or throttle it would function properly. Now upon 'key on' the needle jumps to a bottom pint and is static, no movement whatsoever. I have had several highway travel drives since the problem and I do not believe the problem is in the oiling system??? Any experience or thoughts and recomendations.

Vehicle: '02 Mazda b-3000' Alias 'ford ranger 3.0'

Thanks in advance.

Find the sending unit, and with the key in run and the engine off, pull the sending unit wire off and ground it to the engine block. The guage should swing full scale high or low. Then take the wire off the engine block and let it hang in the air. The guage should swing full scale the opposite direction. If it passes this test, the wiring and the guage are ok, and the sending unit is bad.
