Both batteries had dead cells in them according to my charger, so I replaced them. That did not fix my issue. I sprayed some teflon based dry film lubricant into the ignition key and worked it back and forth several times with the key in between start, run, accessory and off positions which fixed the problem. It seemed like dust gummed up an internal switch of some type in the column and the dry film lube broke it loose.
I haven't had any problems since.
