tylus has a good reputation on FTE. tylus has a good reputation on FTE.
So did the DIY tool do the job? or did you do another method?

The 5.4 issue is a design problem...but the 4.6 3v has the exact same setup...they just have a bit more room around the electrode, so it isn't an issue.

In Ford's defense, it took a few years to even discover there was a problem. It wasn't until late 2006, early 2007 that the entire Spark Plug thing really blew up. That was about the point when the average early 2004-2005 owner started getting 60,000+ miles and started doing plug changes

No idea why it took 'em another 1 yr for the correction...most likely just to kill off the built-up supply they had on hand.

FYI, have fun with a Yota or Chevy. Yota has issues with their motors, and the tailgate is hilarious.

So sue me...
It's a real frustrating issue. God knows I've cursed the blue oval for a lot less. I'd cut anybody some slack for having to deal with it. Glad to hear you got it done!

Tylus, thanks for all the help. I decided to go with the bought tool (Napa auto parts) and it worked perfectly. My thinking was that I didn't want any issues "pushing" the insulator down. Oh well, I know a few who have the same engine so it will get some use.

I cursed a little Saturday evening too. And may have partook in a little drink of the grain...

Now I'll start some more threads about a few more minor issues I'm having and see what the braintrust has to say.

I agree with wisecountybuck and believe me I am a diehard Ford guy. My 2004 Fx4 5.4 is my 4th Ford truck in the last 10-11 years and by far the most problematic! Here is a list of some of the things I can even remember now. P.S. the truck has 50,000 easy miles.

1) 3 new alternators to finally fix the howling/whistling when cold
2) 3 new driver's side window motors
3) completely new front brakes-front end had a huge shake when braking
4) 2 new rear axle seals
5) leaking passenger side rear hub
6) new third brake lamp (was leaking big-time)
7) constant issues with winshield wiper cowling
8) engine has had a tick, been noisey, sounds like a diesel or whatever you want to say since day 1, and my dealer would never fix it because they said this was "normal"

I think that is it for now, so I do think it is okay to bitch some when you pay thirty some thousand on a new truck. Ford pure and simple dropped the ball on some of these things and the spark plug issue is more than just a little issue in my opinion. Now all that said I still plan on getting a Ford for my next truck and have already driven an 09' and thought it felt GREAT! Definately a huge step up from my 2004. Venting is okay........

Who else issues "TSB's" for a spark plug change? LAMBHORGHINI? BENTLEY? NASA?......! personally unless my truck quits running or drops to about 10 mpg i'd just leave them in(or TRADE IT ), my neighbor gots over 205K on his 04 3.7L ram and never needed a tune up yet.

ya, and I bet when he finally does, he look back and go ' gee, wish i had done that sooner'.

Edit: If you've ever had a 3.7L in RAM, you know that performance is not ever going to be part of the language you use to describe the vehicle.

yeah but if it makes it another 100K on the base work truck pack, it will be ready for a one way trip to the caribbean where it can burn oil happily ever after! To some folks out there performance = speed / tow capability, and to others performance = zero maintenace+ high reliability + low ownership costs which =

Very True! I am of the opinion that performance is very objective also. I measure performance on the basis of how well the vehicle handles the tasks for which I purchased it for. Usually for me, it's power ( not speed mind you, think torque-like characteristics) + capability + reliability. No vehicle has zero maintenance costs. If you find one, the maintenance costs or costs of excellent engineering is built into the price of the car in the first place, so you still pay, just at purchase or later and most times both!

Yeah look at mercedesB which are very high cost (engineering wise) and R still high dollar maintenace vehicles and to top that arent never ranked high in overall reliability according to the misc. auto survey reports i've seen.
