depends what you consider "driving in snow"
we talking North Carolina snow, upstate NY snow, or colorado rockies snow? If you are driving in the mountains, I wouldn't screw around with anything that wasn't 4wd and had good winter tires.
If you are talking the occasional "uh oh it snowed last night and I need to get to work" type snow, traction control should be fine. Traction control is great for
helping you not get stuck, but is useless when it comes to getting out of being stuck.
If you are worried about gas mileage and 4x4 - disconnect the front driveshaft during the summer
