howl noise

my 2004 fx4 5.4 has a howling noise when i reach 80 km/hr. if i speed up to 90 the howl goes away. it only seems to howl at 80?? any one have any ideas what could be causing the noise? i have only owned the truck for a few months. noise has been going on for a while now. truck is showing 80000 kms.

Tires?

Differential(s)?

Full moon?

My 98 had bad tire noise at certain speeds unless it was raining. Improper inflation on my part. I had howl from my dif on my 94 at anything over 50kph until the thing died, dang speed sensor crap.

A werewolf under your hood?
Seriously,I think there is a TSB on howling differentials that year.

if it is the diff does that mean something is wrong or is that just how they are for that year?

No. rears are very speed-related as far as the whine or howl is concerned. If it were a wheel bearing or tire, then it would make noise at all speeds. You might consider changing the oil in the rear and using the full-synthetic factory part to replace it.

Probably the diff. Mine did the same thing. $1500 dollars later, it was fixed. If you have it looked at, and it needs to be repaired, push for FORD oem ring and pinion. I had two different aftermarket ones in my diff and they whined right from the start. rear end whined from 45-50mph accelerating only.

Ring and pinion too tight will make it howl at various speeds. Too much preload...Usually.

just had the truck in at alberta driveline. i went with the mechanic for a test drive, when he heard the noise he told me he thought it was the crown and pinion set. he also said it is caused from too heavy of a load either in box or from trailer. i asked if it was necessary to get fixed right away, and he said i could leave it for up to 3 years with no problems except for the noise. 1000 to fix
