Trying to find whats making that noise!

Hey guys Ive got a 97 F150 4wd w/4.6, and about 5-15 seconds after I start it, it makes this "pop" noise from what sound like inside the right fender in the vecinity of the battery area. Doesnt matter whether its first start of the day or last it will always do it. I dont know if any of you have experienced this or not but your advise will be helpful. This noise is starting to bug me.

Don't know planemech. Sorry. And not to pirate your topic .. but ..

Since we're on the topic of noises.. my '98 has a rattling noise coming from the rear, only when I hit bumps in the road. Almost sounds like an exhaust clamp that has loosened up and is just bouncing off the pipes but I checked that and all the clamps are fine. I can't find anything loose anywhere. If anyone knows what else to check please let me know.

TKAT79, my 97 also has the same noise from the rear. I know it can't be the exhaust, checked that. On mine I think the rattling is coming from the little clamp on the leaf springs. I tried to tighten it up but there is a lot of rust. I would recomend checking the bracket that keeps the springs aligned it might be loose.

Actually, steve(ill), I have. I have remote start installed on my truck and I have been all over trying to figure this out, bet I looked like some kind of idiot out there Im sure. Only thing I havent done is try pulling that right front inner fender liner out and listen. This noise is really kinda loud, I can hear it from about 7-8 car lengths away. Its as if a small hammer just takes a little wack at the inside of my fender, you can actually feel it if you put your hand on the fender. Only thing I can guess is that there might be a loose or bad relay or solenoid in that vacinity or something. I was kinda hoping maybe someone else may have heard something like this before. Just in case anybody is wondering, I hear the noise even when I havent had any to drink!

Does it do it at a certain time? Say when you do a certain action?

I'll ask the stupid question, it's not the A/C compressor cycling on is it? It shouldn't be THAT loud, but still.

No its not the A/C compressor, and no it does not matter when or what I do it does this every time about 5-15 sec right after startup. No matter if it is cold or warm, or if I have anything on or not. This is the only time I hear it, if it was any other time- believe me you would notice it. I really dont think there is anything else that I can discribe to help in troubleshooting this. I am still hoping soon to get some time to do some more deeper digging, til then any more suggestions will be appreciated.

What about the starter? Maybe it's not disengaging right away. Has any work been done involving this area?

Did anyone ever solve this problem? I am experiencing the very same thing with my 2003 F150 with the 4.2 V-6. At first I thought it sounded like a cycling a/c compressor but it turns out it is a loud expansion type of pop noise coming from the exhaust system. It does it for a time after first starting the engine and it does it for a time after turning the engine off. It is very loud and can be heard from inside the cab while driving and can also be heard for quite a distance while walking away from the truck after turning it off. It is very strange as there is no exhaust leak type of sound occuring - just these loud, irritating pops.

My 97 4.2 does the same thing.Ive all but concluded that its the exhaust maniflods warming up.The noise is very distinctive, and loud.Ive looked mine over, and there are no cracks.Im figuring heat expansion/contraction.Mine also does it about two minutes after I cut it off......

My 2003 F150 2X4 4.2 has made the same "pop" noise since day one when I purchased it new. Mine happens after shutting it off, regardless of short or long drive time.

It will sit in the garage and "pop" for up to an hour. It is so load at times, it sounds like metal snapping, or a weld under pressure which breaks.

I am sure it is something with the exhaust system, maybe even the heat shields. Never any exhaust leaks, and nothing ever broke.

I now have 110000 miles, and just let it "snap, crackle, and pop"

Trying to find what's making that noise!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Since mine does the exact same thing I guess it's nothing to worry about. I've owned it since it was brand new in 2003 and had always noticed the noises after shutting it down but never noticed it occuring right after start up until recently.

Like someone said, just let it "snap, crackle, and pop!"
